AUSTRALIAN sprint star Joshua Ross says he is still Beijing-bound despite being dumped via text message by his coach, Emil Rizk.

Rizk yesterday slammed Ross, claiming the sprinter was more committed to partying than running, and fired off a text that read: “I cease being your coach”.

Rizk pointed at Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, who recently broke the 100m world record clocking 9.72 seconds, as a man committed to his sport.

“I heard that overseas he was still going out and getting drunk,” Rizk said. “I don’t think Josh Ross has changed. Usain Bolt; now there’s dedication. He knows what it takes to be No.1.”

Ross, whose personal best is 10.08s, declined to comment on Rizk’s allegations and said he believed he would be on the 100m start line in China in August.

It is understood that AA officials would like him to run around 10.10 before he can secure an individual place on the Australian track and field team to be finalised on June 23.

“I feel like I’m in reasonable shape,” Ross said. “I’ve kept going with my training. I started pretty late in preparing for these Games and it’s going to be a miracle if I can run those times. AA want me to run 10.10-10.15 and I believe I can do it.”

This year has been chaotic for Ross. He abandoned his Olympic campaign in February battling depression but was back on track after reuniting with Rizk in March. Since then, Ross has posted a fastest time of 10.29s and that is unlikely to be enough to ensure him selection.

Ross has another chance to go faster at a meeting on the Gold Coast this weekend.

As Ross trained on coachless yesterday, Rizk said he lacked determination to be an Olympian, adding he showed him no respect at the end of their partnership.

“I don’t think he’s dedicated or determined enough,” Rizk said. “I think he’s got a lot of issues. He has shown no respect at all to the coach. He has shown no dedication or commitment. I think he has lost his path again. He lacks that determination to be an athlete. I feel without dedication in this sport he won’t go a long way. You just can’t come in half-hearted. I don’t work with anyone that’s going to be a liability.”

It’s the not the first time that Rizk, who was Ross’s third coach in five months, and Ross have had a public falling out.

The pair split after their disastrous world championships campaign in Osaka last August, which led to the sprinter terminating the partnership via email soon after.

After they parted, Rizk said Ross was not “mentally capable” of running at major international meets and more interested in partying during last year’s European season. Rizk said Ross was “too busy focusing on girls and alcohol and going out”.

It could be the first time for 28 years, since the 1980 Moscow Olympics, that an Australian man has not run the 100m and 200m.

I wonder if it has yet occurred to Rizk that his criticisms of Nanny69 for the results he achieved attempting to coach a totally de-motivated Josh Ross were also totally invalid.

That would go under the category of “walk a mile in my boots”.

Emil Rizk has a lot to learn about diplomacy. Even if there’s some truth in it, surely it would be better to keep it private than to hang the bloke out to dry.

I have sacked several athletes over the journey for various reasons but never once have I felt compelled to discredit, demean or criticise the athlete publicly. Close the door and move on. Slagging off at the athlete helps no-one.

What a bloody ego Rizk must have!

for what, jr is the best thing he’s produced.

I talked Emil out of departing with JR probably three times in the last month. I thought they should keep working together until the OG. But this coach/athlete relationship was never going to be long term. It’s simple JS skips training gets drunk & isn’t committed to be a world class athlete.

He’s had everyone who could help in Oz helping him. Few people get the support he has had. When he gets over his depression and gets back on track he’ll see that, but who will be left to help him.

Not quite…

He should come and train in the UK…I’d work with him.

After a few months you might get tired off him skipping practice and getting drunk. The talent is undeniable but he seems to off on tangents.

I wonder what the reason is for his erratic behaviour. From 2003 - 2007 he seemed pretty focused on the job. He was steadily improving, staying healthy and all of that, not to mention the four straight National Titles he won…

Maybe he is an alcoholic. This is a disease not really a life style choice.

Having said that J.R. should also know this is something that can be controlled.

Now that is a life style choice

Just because you’re good doesn’t mean you are necessarily dedicated to athletics. There exists a TON of unrealized potential out there.

pretty big call!!!

So is he coaching himself now?

On a side not, does anyone know any details of Emil Rizk’s training methods?

I read that he previously trained under Tellez and uses L-S periodization, but that’s all I really know.

Not running 10.29 he isn’t.

Josh has teamed up with one of the NSWIS coaches.

Why? I know a guy that has made world champs semis that have alcohol problems. I know medallist Jumpers that chain smoke and eat terribly. I don’t think they did as well as they could have, but they still did it.

Similarly in Oly weightlifting David Rigert is known to have chain smoked and guzzled vodka, Naim (3x oly gold) smoked/smokes, Pyrros Dimas (3x oly gold) smoked/smokes. I dontthink they could have done much better not that smoking is good or anything.

Aerobic fitness has no real direct effects for OL.

bumped into Josh at the track the other day when they were filming a spot on him for the great outdoors…

i asked how he was going he said i am coachless but the relay will make it so its all good.

he seemed suprised when i mentioned the article from the herald… from his point of view he sacked emil and nothing seemed to have changed once the honeymoon period was over again, put this one in the category of no one will ever know what was going on…
