had another calf cramp in the middle of the night. no damage done, but the muscle was extremely hypertonic for a couple of days. I threw everything I had at it and it certainly helped. back up and running again in no time.

pertty happy that I finally worked out how to do sliding. I can already fee a massive difference in my legs. my hamstrings were particularly rough in texture, so Iā€™ll be looking to smooth those out over the course of the season. I expect my range of motion to improve, as well.

13 days until my 100m at the pan pacs. I donā€™t think Iā€™ll be doing any particular tough sessions. I will keep it to short distances at speed, or long and slow.

I have a nice bruise on my right string, but it doesnā€™t appear to be anything too serious. There was a little bit of tightness, but it went away as I warmed up and did some light massage.

Iā€™ve got a 60 and a 200 on the weekend, but I wonā€™t be gunning for big times. Iā€™ll just keep it smooth and relaxedā€¦

How cool is it!! Now THAT is therapy. Cupping without slidingā€¦ itā€™s not even in the same ball parkā€¦

Canā€™t really self slide on your back. Straight cupping works there. I think the sliding is slightly more aggressive, but less so than regular massageā€¦

Use, Wife, girlfriend, some broad you picked up last nightā€¦

or all three at the same time.

wednesday evening
BE - testing the hamstrings

thursday
treadmill - 5x300m (6, 9, 12, 9, 9)

Iā€™m getting a bit of soreness at the top of the right hamstring, and the inner hamstring/adductor area seems to be a bit shonky. nothing too outrageous, though. it only really shows up under pressure. I donā€™t realy feel it during running - just a little bit of reduced ROM. Iā€™m certainly having second thoughts about how hard I will take it on saturday, though. Iā€™ll try and do as much work as I can to get the circulation going through without having to fiddle too much with the muscle itselfā€¦

friday
explosive snatch squat - 3:10 10
BE - 1:10 BW
rev hyp - 2:10 (knees out), 2:5 (knees in)

just testing things. not too bad. fingers crossed for my 60 tomorrow. I donā€™t expect to go in all guns blazing. just a test run before next weekā€¦

rubbish run on saturday. warmed up too early, butchered the start. Iā€™m pretty sure there was a headwind, but the result came up NWI. every other heat was run into a gale.

my last shoot out before pan pacs. the main goal of this session was to fix my block set up, because I have not been getting good power at the start. I fiddled around with the distances a bit and now I am pretty confident I have got a much better balance.

the transition from being down at the start through to upright at top speed was working well. going hard at around 20-40 seems to be working well, with hard knees pumping.

now itā€™s all about getting the muscles looseā€¦

wednesday
light hamstring glute exercises
calf/quad/hamstring massage

thursday
light movements
back and leg massage

everyone in my family has had a throaty bug for the last week. I first started to feel it on friday evening and itā€™s been hovering below the surface ever since. as a result I have actually been feeling really tired the last few days, despite the fact that I have cut my training right back.

quads were still sore yesterday, but the are feeling much better today. range of motion in my hips was pretty bad for a few days, but itā€™s starting to come back.

tonight I am getting packed and gathering everything I am going to need for the tripā€¦

Good luck to you and BoldW !!

Saturday

Thanks, old bloke.

I was feeling pretty crook for most of the day. I was so weak and feeble that I decided not to run, until I got a bit of energy and changed my mind. The race didnā€™t go too badly for the first 70m, then my left knee started to hurt and my right hammy tightened up. I limped over the line in 5th place.

When I got back to the hotel I started to feel worse and worse. I tracked down an after hours doctor who told me that I had a temperature of 38.5 and ā€œsevere tonsillitisā€. I now have two courses of antibiotics to get through and Iā€™m pretty much cooked as far as sprinting goes, for a while.

On another note, I saw bold finish 4th in his 800, but I wasnā€™t able to catch up with him after the raceā€¦

so I had tonsillitis, I took my anti-biotics, I got better. then a day later it returned and I went back on the meds. then I had a crazy week of report writing in which I got very little sleep.

ok, now that Iā€™ve got all that out of the way itā€™s time to get back down to business.

after my debacle of a weekend at the gold coast I had a bit of an issue with my left knee. it locked up a bit during my race, so I went to get a free treatment from one of the physios they provided. he slightly improved my initial complaint, although he managed to aggravate my patellar tendon and other areas while he was poking around testing what hurt and what didnā€™t. so I went from having a slight problem that appeared at top speed but I could otherwise barely detect to having a very sore knee that was hurting when I walk/sat/jogged/farted/whatever. I wasnā€™t too happy about that, but I hoped that having some time off while I was getting healthy would allow it to settle. unfortunately, it didnā€™t.

I did a bunch of treatments and concluded that my VM needed activating. I gave it a burst of EMS and it started feeling better straight away. today I ventured out onto the track for the first time in ages and I had very little discomfort, so thatā€™s a win.

before all that, Iā€™ve been gradually easing myself back into some exercise, although my energy levels have been pretty low. I remember now why I no longer do standard squats, as even after doing extremely light weights I can feel my back siezing up and curving over. hopefully the EMS will be able to help me gain/maintain strength levels without having to load up my spine. Iā€™ve been pretty happy with my dabbles so far. now that things are back on track I will start to work it into my regular routineā€¦

Iā€™m still getting issues from my knee. it felt pretty good after my run on sunday, but monday was a different story. it cracks several times a day and is often extremely uncomfortable. I will probably be getting a scan on thursday, but I remain optimistic that I will be able to treat it myself to a certain degree. I can still do most of my strength work without too much drama, but itā€™s high speeds that seeems to bring it out. I hope thereā€™s not a loose bit of tissue flopping around in there, or somethingā€¦

had an ultrasound/x-ray analysis on my knee last week. no structural damage, although there is some slight calcification of the quad tendon at there top of the kneecap. there is a bit of extra fluid in the area, as well. this indicates that the knee is ā€œunhappyā€, although the guy couldnā€™t locate a specific problem. his suggestion was that there might be some strain to the ligaments that isnā€™t showing up. he recommended 2 months of rest, which ainā€™t going to happen. it was more welcome advice than I got from my doctor who suggested I might need to think about changing sports!

since the scan my knee has been settling down.

bought myself a hip belt (thanks TrevorS), and Iā€™m finding it to be a brilliant way to load up the legs without ruining my glass back. it does seem to put all of the weight straight onto the quads, although I guess that isnā€™t a bad thing since the hamstrings get a good high intensity workout from sprinting. Iā€™m keeping hamstring weights under a ā€œspeed (weight) limitā€ so that I can be sure I wonā€™t risk an injury. I donā€™t want to overdo it like I did a few months back.

I have only been to the track once since my gold coast debacle, so it kind of feels like Iā€™ve hardly been doing anything, but when I look at my notes Iā€™ve actually done something every day. my current weekly program looks something like this:

wednesday - speed
thursday - tempo
friday - weights (quads, hams, glutes, back)
saturday - tempo
sunday - sled/SE/calves
monday/tuesday - regen

I leave the calf work to sunday because I tend to get a bit sore there when I work on them (probably why I avoid it and probably why I think they are weak). the SE takes a bit out of me as well, so the two full days of recovery are well placed. it also leaves me fresh and ready for a high quality/injury free session on wednesday. tempo follows high sessions to flush the system.

further input is welcomeā€¦

There is a cf dvd, fundamentals, i think its, ā€œsolving problemsā€
He uses a Jade stone to break up scare tissue, adheasions etc.
Works a treat, and should help you break up the calcium on your tendons.

Im finding i can do the same with the Cups. But jade stone is worth a try.

I would also do foamrolling on the thighs, i find i get better results from the cups from clients who do regular foamrolling.

very busy and stressful weekend, so only managed to fit in one session of weights on sunday night. not long before the end of the school year and I will be able to devote a lot more time and energy to training.

bold, the calcium in my quad tendon appears to be a couple of milimetres from the patellar. could a jade sone deal with that??

the knee issue is gradually fading away. it is still there but I can run faster and longer without it flaring up on me. counter to what should be happening, I often find that the soreness decreases with exercise. not quite sure what thatā€™s all about.

my weights routine is working well for me. I think Iā€™ve got a good balance going that is not interfering with my track work, which has often been a problem for me in the past. the hip squats are good because I can add more weight without needing to worry at all about my back. in fact, my legs are really looking quite a bit different already. you might think that 65kg is no great shakes, but itā€™s quite a bit harder to do them with a hip swuat than a regular back squat, I find. Iā€™m not certain why, but I think itā€™s because more of the work is focussed on the quads and less by the hamstrings. this is ok by me because most of my weights work targets the posterior chain, and itā€™s good to be able to exert without having to worry about how you are going to pull up the next day.

the pyramid and SE sessions are really having an effect. I feel a lot fitter already. the first set of pyramids started off with 400 on the track with spikes. my calves hurt for about 4-5 days after, so now I do them in runners and I start from 300ā€¦

Sorry, just noticed.
Yes, the jade stone should work a treat
