TrackAlerts.com spoke to World Championships 400m bronze medalist, T&T’s Renny Quow, as he reflected on his performance in Berlin.

He had first come to world recognition with his shock gold medal at the Beijing World Juniors in 2006 – a performance that surprised him, still not believing, after 3 years, that he had won a medal.

However, he referred to that accomplishment as just the start, Berlin being the major achievement and for which, while having it “sink in” as he relaxed with his family, he still felt good.

The clearly religious Quow, credited the Heavenly Father for his successes saying “God has a lot to do with it and me trying to believe in myself everywhere I go.”

His coach’s role came in for prominent mention “I always have to have my coach pep-talk me a little bit to heighten me up. I go out there and do what I have to do. I go out there and train.”

In the Berlin Final he was well off the pack going down the straight and there were thoughts of his not medaling but he came back to take third place, glancing across, as he admits, to make sure he was safe. His time of was 45.02, well off his semi final mark of 44.53.

He explained: “People have to understand track and field though. If you PR (Personal record) a day or two before you are going to have some side effects. So that’s what I had. I had some side effects.

"I PR. I ran the fastest I ever ran. That was 44.53 and that was the second fastest time for Trinidad and Tobago. And doing something like that is not easy, it’s hard. And to come back the other day and to run the finals, it’s really hard. That’s what people have to understand.

" They see it in their own way but I don’t really mind. Everyone has a mind to think what they want but I still respect my fans and I respect everyone for supporting.”

Asked about his absence from the World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki, he responded “My sponsor, kinda messed that up for me because I wasn’t really planning on running in Brussels. I was planning on running in the World Athletic Finals but (Brussels) was a week before and I guess I was tired so I said, you know what, let’s call it a season because I didn’t want to go to the World Athletic Finals and embarrass myself.”

He ended our conversation by speaking of his plans for the immediate future which involved more visits to the beach in Tobago and preparing to start training in two weeks.
