Question about cold weather and T&F

My question is related to how cold weather effects people training for T&F, specifically sprinters.

It is significant, or not a big deal? I may be going to a college in the midwest (private) and it snows up there :). I havn’t seen a snowflake in a while, so is the cold a real significant thing, or not really if I just train at an indoor track? I do the 200m/400m.

Somebody must know something about this, who lives in the north.

If you have an indoor track, you should be fine. If you don’t, then yes, it is very very very significant.

For 200/400 it might be a problem. There are ways around it if you have an indoor track but unless it is a full 400m one you may find it hard…

It may be hard, but I think you’ll manage with the right coaching. The Minnesota guys and UWLaCrosse guys do “alright” (understatement of the year) in the 400m (and in all events actually) with just a 200m indoor track.

I have another college I can go to down south. Its not one I particulary want to go to, but its a good school. I could always go to that school for one year, do good, and transfer to one I would like in the south.

But, if I do go up to the midwest, here is my question. Does anyone know of any 400m indoor track in the Ohio/Michigan area? I know there is one in Canada when I looked tracks up and thought I remember hearing of one in the Ohio/Michigan area.

Also, if I have to train on a 200m track, is that a bad thing to do for 200m/400m runners? I never used one before.

I don’t think there are any in the Ohio/Michigan area–there are very few in the world, actually, as it would require a rather large building, hence the reason why they bank the tracks indoor. The only real problems with the shorter tracks are the sharp turns (this applies more for the 200m and only if you’re in an inside lane) and the hard surfaces (generally mondo).

Hell, it looks like I’ll probably be staying in this state for one more year (then I tranfer out) :).

I hate these “good ol’ boys” down here, but I guess thats the price for good weather and a nice track. I’m still trying to get information from both colleges about the tracks, but because of the holidays, I wont get a response until tomorrow.
