If you have a question that you think is stupid, or if you have heard of a quacked-out theory that you think may have some merit to it…here is the place for it. This will be NHB…No Hold Barred.
Senior members…we all have areas where we are stonger or weaker in knowledge in…perhaps here we can ask those questions we always wanted to ask, but were too afraid to do so. I have a few myself.
If during a ten day tamper we taper down. As in cut the amount of speedwork. Why would this not be done throughout the cycle to recieve a peaking effect each cycle.?
I was looking into how to inject traumeel into your knee and it looks somewhat difficult. Is it possible to do this yourself without putting yourself in jeopardy?

to quote my dad when i asked him it was possible if i could jump off our roof, clear the fence and land in the neighbours pool “possible yes, probable no.”
CF has stressed the importance of getting a trained professional to dart you with traumeel. im not flaming you tim, just be careful brother, dont turn a season ending injuy into a carear ending injury.
T,
Just my thoughts on the first question. But if you have a loading scheme of 3 weeks building followed by a week of regeneration (or however), I have found that the first week back seems to provide some “peaking” feel in the athletes. They are more fresh and ready to begin the next cycle. The volume always undulates throughout each cycle, so to prevent staleness. Is this what you are thinking?
but seriously the problem is you just to ask your therapist to do this you have to pay money. I am broke. Hopefully I would be getting finiacial aid and student loans to offset this.
My take on your first question Tim is as follows: Your thoughts were what I at one point thought as well…I would do about 4 x 10day tapers with my athletes throughout a season.
The main problem that I had was that after the first taper my athletes never improved. So I thought…hey we have to lower the volume even more as it is too much for them. The truth of the matter is is that without the stimulation, the Nervous System starts to go backwards as does strength (so I have found in my experience). The athete de-trains.
The taper only seemed to work after a certain amount of volume had been reached. Furthermore, what I did not realize then was that athletes that are only running 10.70-11.20sec for the 100m, do not need to taper for 10 days. Their CNS does not get taxed like a 10.00 runner.
This of course compounded the problem. My athletes were being severly undertrained, so when I would prescribe them the 10 day taper workout as described in Speed Trap…it was too much and injuries (too sore, muscle aches, joint pain…but nothing major at this point), would result.
My thinking then was…oh no, we are doing too much! So I would decrease the volume, which lead to the athlete’s being even less prepared for the massive impact the 10 day taper workout has on the body, which in turn lead to more injuries (though minor…at first).
At the most, my athletes will get a 7 day taper this year, once, for their main competition.
I must do the least amount of speedwork in the world. I think I might up the speedwork I do depending on what kind of practice times I run. Herb the 10 day taper is still kind of confusing to me. It seems like such a highload. I have trouble just recovery from one meet. It takes me almost 14 days sometimes. And I am talking about during those 14 days using limited training. Any suggestions?

Tim,
I think that you are confusing CNS fatigue with some other sort of fatigue. I have run PBs with extremely sore muscles. Meaning, my CNS was great…although my muscular system may not have been fully recovered. After a day of Lower intensity Med-ball work or weights…my muscles feel sore, but man oh man do I ever have a pop in my stride. It has happened on more than one occasion that I would get back from a national trainng/competition camp, after (foolishly) having 7 races within 4 days, that a week later, I run a Personal Best. The reason…I was not yet fast enough to stress my CNS at the camp and I recovered from it within a week.
I gather that you have Charlie’s Training Manual. What does it say in there regarding speed work volume for one session. Wasn’t there a thread on that topic just a few weeks ago?
Excellent point. I have never ran a pr with muscle soreness but then again I have never attempted to run a meet with it. I see your right about cns fatigue and muscle fatigue.
Could someone please explain the step progresion and go into detail about it.
I still dont understand why the volume of speedwork would be increased every week? Why not tapered? Anyone care to start.
This was in Flagstaff Arizona at a High Altitude Competition Camp. I live on the West Coast of Canada. There are a few high calibre meets here, but by far not enough and regardless it costs me a minumum of $200.00 by the time I am done with travel and food.
