had a conversation with a buddy at the gym today and he was asking me a couple nutrition questions, more specific regarding protein intake. i broke it down for him and it includes (9:30 pm) cottage cheese and grow just before bed and a 6 egg (4 white 2 whole) veggie omlette first thing (6:30am) in the morning.
i also added that everynight i bring 30 grams of protein in powder form and leave it dry on my night stand beside a shaker with water. if i wake up during the night (after 2ish when i figure the the cottage cheese is gone and im in/or almost in a negative nitrogen balance) ill mix/drink the shake and then go back to sleep.
he suggested i was completely nuts and i couldnt even see reality from where i live. i said he was wrong, i may be a tad…focused(?) but i dont think im the only athlete that does this.
If you do it, then I do it! People ask me, “Herb” they say, “What do you do for nutrition?” I always answer them, “Do you know the Nightmare?..ya, that’s right, I do that!”
This may sound like I am beign sarcastic, the I am not. Nightmare4d is the most disciplined guy I know when it comes to nutrition and working out. If he does it, then I do it (or do my best).
That sounds a little crazy to me. I have heard of bodybuilders who have done that in the past.
Now is there any chance you may be robbing Peter to pay Paul? (Did I even get that right lol?)
What I am saying is that you are awaking out of REM sleep when recovery is happening. Is disturbing the sleep cycle worth getting that protein?
good question and you are 100% right, i dont set an alarm just for protein. i naturally seem to wake up at least once through the night between 2ish and 5 ish (my ex wife used to joke that it was my catabolic alarm). id rather sleep straight through the night but since im awake (and i dont even have to get out of bed), ill mix/drink it and ive never had a problem getting back to sleep.
I hear that. As long as you aren’t setting an alarm and you can fall back asleep then why not? But maybe since you started doing this now it actually is set on your internal clock and you do get up just to take the protein. Anyhow, I get it isn’t a big deal right?
I’d also like to know how many others on here take part in this madness!!?
I was taking my protein shake just before bed time but i was kiling my wife with the gases problem, so, i started to get only Amino 2222 before bed time and no Protein Shake after 8pm.
Now i have a good reason to spend more money on protein powders. Actualy, i was taking my last “botle” of soy protein mixed with albumin + whey protein. ( I can say definitely: i was like a BOMB )
That’s not ENTIRELY true. Going with a WPI vs. a WPC may make all the difference in the world. Obviously he’ll have to spend more on that, but in terms of switching brands, that certainly may not be necessary.
For instance, Dymatize makes good, value priced WPC and WPI.
People are creatures of habit. If you make it a habit of waking up in the middle of the night then it will be so.
I think that this idea of nightime feeding really depends on your goal. I actually did this about 5-6 years ago. Did I really notice anything in terms of size or strength? Not really. Just have a steak, chicken or fish along with flax oil an hour before bedtime. That will help with preventing a catabolic state.
new born babies feed every 3 or so hours whether its day or night.they are in the process of growing and grow they will do with the amount of feeds they get.bodybuilders apply the exact same process because of the link between growth.track athletes…personally i would prefere to recover by sleep and to make sure that i get a solid deep 7-8hours of sleep compared with a feed anytime.
If that’s directed towards my use of Dymatize as an example, then by all means substitute that for another example, it was just a random brand I was throwing out there. The crux of the matter, and the point of my original comment, was that Isolates are generally more agreeable than Concentrates for people who suffer from gastric distress from whey shakes, particularly lactose intolerant individuals.
good points…you need some trace (half a gram) per serving since some of the growth fractions are found in the membranes. Some of the new isolates have concentrate benefits without the lactose issues.
