Powell's 400 opener

KINGSTON, Jan 18, 2008 - World 100m champion and record-holder Asafa Powell will open the 2008 season here at next week’s Grace Jackson Invitational meet at the National Stadium, organizers announced Friday.

Powell will run the 400 meters in the January 26 meet just as he did in the same meet last year to begin his 2007 campaign.

Powell ran a world-record 9.74 seconds last September in Rieti, Italy, to break his prior world mark of 9.77.

At last year’s opener in Kingston, Powell won his 400m heat in a personal best 47.46 seconds but finished only fourth overall in a run that was aimed at building strength and endurance for the sprint star.

round and round we go:confused:

Depends on how much effort he puts into it and what else he competes in this winter. He’s already made plans for Australia so let’s wait and see.

February isn’t it?

this, like all of his previous 400 openers seems to be more of a “local boy makes it big and shows up and gives back” than anything else.

I don’t think opening up with 47s will hurt a 100m 9.7 guy. It won’t have any direct cross over to SE of the 100m. But there is strengthen that has some indirect effect.

Using 400 openers for L-S prep is Ok, it would be madness for S-L guys to open up with a 400m. I love to see Josh run a 400m at the moment.
