what do the forum think about Asafa running 200s? I generally think a 100m speciallist should race 200m purely from a speed endurance point of view, as I think it will help their performance there. Secondly, I think sprinters are sprinters, therefore I don’t really like the 100m or 200m specialism, or at least running one event exclusively. However, Asafa has had a few problems stemming from 200m races, so I am not sure if it is in his best interest to run it in the build up to an Olympic games. Craig when he was younger was successful over 200m, in fact his first regional title was over 200m, but then he started getting issues as his pelvis was susceptible to slipping, and the bend aggrevated these issues, so he ran them less frequently and has never really looked back. What about Asafa though? His problems seem to be more soft tissue related, but correct me if I am wrong! Thoughts?
Lil off topic, i dont think a sprinter can be one of the all time best unless they compete in more then one event.
all time greatest sprinters:
mo green
carl lewis
bob hayes
Jesse owens
Powell
Bob Hayes rarely
Well last year coming off a groin injury, he ran a 200m for his first meet back.
I got a question though, how much if any, do sprinters (elite) do maximal speed work on the bend or coming off the bend?
True … though he did set or equal the WR for 220yd once or twice. Was 3rd in '64 Olympic Trial (The 1st one of the year) but gave up his spot for Henry Carr, who won in Tokyo with 20.36
I agree with that. Was largely Darren’s motivation to do more 200s I believe, leading to an OG silver!
That’s an interesting question, and I don’t know. In my experience all the flat out work shorter than 100m has been done on the straight. However, sometimes distances like 150m have been done using the whole bend. You could argue you are seeing maximal effort when a session consists of 2-3x150m run like that and therefore near maximum velocity on the bend.
Do we have the result of that 200 yet? I had a look on the internet, but my sources didn’t have it, so dunno if anyone else does??
This is strange, I cant find anything on the 200 either.
I’m more interested to see what Brown and Frater run, as I think Powell will run around 20.2 if conditions are good, but the other two I think are a little more unpredictable. I want to see if Francis’ training has benefitted Brown in the 200, as I would imagine it should from what I gather. Frater though I think just doesn’t have the body type to run as good a 200 as 100m.
Running on the bend is one issue, of course. But it could also be used for “indirectly” lowering the training intensity, no?
Very true. Could you not kill two birds with one stone by running on the bend then? i.e. practicing the art of bend running, whilst also limiting the CNS fatigue? Unless of course CNS fatigue is linked to effort as opposed to absolute speed in this instance? Off short recovery I the CNS remains less taxed as the body is unable to produce the intensity to stress it. However, when the velocity is limited by external factors, does this have the same affect?
What happened to the 200m for Asafa and Brown then??

Thats what im thinking now. like wtf one article says 200m another says relay results! ![]()
Asafa & Darrell didn’t run the 200m. DNS that’s all. No injuries or anything to my knowledge, nothing to worry about
Well I still wanna know the reason of the DNS but ya obviously ran the relay fine, no injuries all good ![]()
