Well i’m not sure what it is but here’s the story.
This past Thursday I was icing my knee which was a little bit stiff and tendy (thus the reason i was icing it) I was using one of them bags you get at gas stations and one of my coaches wrapped it around my leg so it would surround the side of my knee. I kept it on there for about 20-30 minutes and when i took it off I noticed that my foot and part of my calf was completely numb and I couldn’t even move my foot even if i tried. Eventually I could move my leg but there was a slight numbness on the outter side of my calf and the top outside part of my foot (the part where there is liie a “big ball” of muscle by the outter ankle along with the side of it) I thought it was just an after effect and would go away later on in the night. But it didn’t. It’s been hurting since Thursday and it is still a problem with me, though not as bad, it is still kinda numb. I can sitll feel in it just not as good and sometiems when i run on it it kind of rolls over. The feeling is like a numb/tired feeling.
This is really scaring the crap out of me because one of my friends said they heard a story where this hapened ot someone elseand they had to amputate his leg and the other person’s leg was numb for the rest of his life!!
If anybody knows how to cure or treat this please tell me. I have tried heat, massage and what not (not ice sicne it was the cause of it)I just want my old leg and foot back!
You froze (damaged) your peroneal nerve. Rather, your coach froze your peroneal nerve. The injury may or may not be permanent. You need an EMG and nerve conduction test to see at what level the nerve is functioning. Sounds like it’s not firing much at all. Can you move your foot up?
This is a general idea of the nerve you’re looking at.
Somehow I doubt you’ll have permanent damages from icing for 20–30 minutes. Nevertheless, your symptoms sound pretty odd and you should have them checked. However, there will be no amputation I’m sure! I’m sorry I can’t help you out more!
Thomas, I can move my foot all around, its just when i try to bend it outward i get like this “tired” and “numb” feeling. I have feeling it it, just not much. But it must not be that bad if i can move my foot around and bend and flex my toes right?
Fabio, I don’t think it is a worst case scenerio. But the fact that you have on-going symptoms, I feel you still need to be evaluated. The bending outward of your foot that you describe is called eversion of the ankle. The peroneal muscle group is innervated by the peroneal nerve which you have damaged.
BTW, what kind of ice bag was this?
Somehow I doubt you’ll have permanent damages from icing for 20–30 minutes.
I was able to run an 11.3 with it today but my coach only had me do the 100. The weather was pretty bad too but after today’s meet I am done for the week. Went to stat care, they told me to take 600 mg ibuprofen ofr 10 days, then 400 for 10 days then 200 for 10 days…
