Photos from 2003 World Weightlifting Championships - Vancouver

Taken from the stands with my Canon G3… during the 94Kg weight class, A session.

Number2,

Did you by chance get any connections regarding purchasing the rubberized weights?

Herb,

The equipment was essentially “rented” to the Championships by Eleiko. But it is also available for sale. Full sets (bars and plates) can be had for anywhere from $2,200 to $3,000 US (training sets and competition sets). It’s not a huge savings from buying the equipment new, but you do save a whole lot on shipping (if you’re in Vancouver). They also are selling platforms, squat stands, plate racks and other equipment from what I understand. Let me know if you are interested (or know anyone who’s interested) and I can put you in touch with the right person.

Number two,
Great picture of Alexeev. I was fortunate enough to attend the 1978 or 1979 worlds in Gettysburg, Pa. It was unfortunately the year he blew out his quad. He and David Rigert were unbelieveable. All things considered he looks good. Did you talk to him or see and other notable lifters from the past acudave

Hey Acudave,

Alexeyev looked great. What is he now, 61 years old? He’s still is one big mass of a man. I got up close to him, but didn’t get to say hello. People were saying his English wasn’t great, so I didn’t want to accidentally offend him and suffer the consequences.

Apparently David Rigert was on hand in a coaching capacity. I didn’t see him, but others said he was a mere shadow of his former self (smaller, that is). Other people I noticed in the audience were Harvey Newton (former US weightlifting coach and author) and Arnie Dreschler (Weightlifting Encyclopedia author).

I will try to post some video clips soon.
