Well considering this is mainly a moveing bone(knee cap) with more connecting tissue then bone i would say its a tendonitis, which would just need some rest and iceing.
There may be different reasons to the pain but if RICE isn’t working you might want to check with your Ortho. For me an xray revealed my knee cap was not tracking properly and everytime I squatted or lunged it caused inflammation. Of course over time this can lead to other issues if not rehabbed properly. Hope you are all better now.
