Relays: There will be a maximum of 16 qualified teams in each event, based on the aggregate of the two fastest times achieved by national teams at IAAF recognised international events from 1 Jan 2007 to 16 July 2008.
The first 20 runners in the men’s and women’s marathons in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka will be considered as having met ‘A’ qualification standard.
A country may enter a maximum of 3 qualified athletes in each individual event if all entered athletes meet the A qualification standard, or 1 athlete per event if they have met the B standard only. Countries without any qualified athletes may enter their best male athlete and their best female athlete for one event each, with the exception of the combined events, 10,000m and steeplechase.
Athletes must reach the qualification standards from 1 Jan 2007 (1 Sep 2006 for marathon, combined events and walks) until 23 July 2008 for individual events or until 16 July 2008 for relay events in order to be eligible to participate.
Performances achieved in mixed events between male and female participants, held completely in the stadium, will not be accepted, nor will wind-assisted performances or hand timed marks in 100m, 200m, 400m, 110mh and 400mh.
Indoor performances will be accepted.
For the marathon and 50k walk, senior athletes only (aged 20 and over on 31 Dec 2008) will be accepted and Junior athletes (18 or 19 on 31 Dec 2008) may compete in any other event. Youth athletes (16 or 17 on 31 Dec 2008) may compete in any event except the throws, decathlon, 10,000m, marathon and walks. Athletes younger than 16 on 31 Dec 2008 cannot be entered in any event.
