Official Picks -100m Dash Bejiing

Bolt - 9,67

Powell - 9,80

Dix - 9,88

Bolt looks like he’s going to brake the record…but then again we all said that about Asafa when he was flying through the heats.

Bolt-9.69
Powell 9.78

I dont think Gay will make the podium!

A lot of athletes have tanked after the quarter finals. Crawford… 9.89 in the quarters then finished forth in the final. Ato ran 9.87… and finished fifth. How bout Frankie Fredricks, 9.92 I think . What did he run after that. He didn’t win thats for sure. Enough with this talk.

There is way to much hype over this 9.92. I’m looking for a few athletes to completely tank after the semis and the final. Thompson is one of them. What did he run at the WC’s 10.45. Tankage. There’s gonna be a lot of tankage. The U.S guys will pull through. I was impressed with Dix. He wasn’t pushing it. Gay will also move on.

-Guy

Thompson has improved a whole lot from 2007.

powell 970
bolt 971
for third Tight race between dix, thompson and OBIKWELU might sneak in their.

Powell is gonna put so much pressure on them that they will bust pipes.

Hmmm…Tyson said he was going to run a 9.6(Or something to that effect) why would he say that if his leg was still bothering him?

When did tyson say that?

EACH one of the world’s three great sprinters would consider it a major disappointment if they were not crowned 100 metres Olympic champion tonight (12.30am AEST). Here, I break down their strengths and weaknesses:

ASAFA POWELL (Jam) 9.74s

Strengths: He is the most powerful of the three, giving him an advantage during the important drive phase of the race in the first 30 metres. He has broken the world record twice and has the most sub-10-second performances of the three. He also has the most experience, having participated in the finals of the past two world titles and the 2004 Olympics.

Weaknesses: Powell is the only one of the group who is not a world-class 200 metres sprinter, so he is relatively weak at the end of his race. If he can use his superior power at the start and establish a lead, he will have trouble holding off the other two. Powell is mentally the weakest of the three and he has shown that in the past by establishing himself as favourite and failing to capitalise.

Advice: Powell has been erratic in the rounds at most championships - he can stop too soon, look at himself as he runs and appear nervous. He should adopt an all-business approach from round one: run the first part of the race like a final and win every round. Because he has failed before and it didn’t end his life or career, Powell should have no fear and view the race as an opportunity.

TYSON GAY (US) 9.77s

Strengths: Gay probably has the quickest “turnover” of the group, meaning he can simply turn his legs faster than the other two. He has run his fastest times this year, which will boost his confidence, and is in great, consistent form. Gay is also an exceptional closer; he can overcome a poor start over the first 30 metres and then use his renowned 200 metres strength to catch the leader.

Weaknesses: Gay had an injury - first described as a severe cramp by his coach - in the 200 at the US Olympic trials. But he hasn’t raced since. A later diagnosis revealed Gay had a hamstring strain. The 100 is a race that requires event sharpness - that is, being familiar with the execution of the race. He may be lacking this competitive edge. And his start is inconsistent.

Advice: He should use visualisation as a tool, running the race over and over again in his mind. To substitute for his lack of actual racing, he should visualise himself executing his race strategy from start to finish. Gay should focus on a good start in each round to ensure he begins well in the final.

USAIN BOLT (Jam) 9.72s WR

Strengths: Bolt is the most impressive of the three as a sprinter because of his height (193 centimetres). Normally such a stature would limit a sprinter’s ability to execute a good start and achieve excellent turnover. As a 200 runner, Bolt had been gangly and his technique was far from perfect. That has changed this year. His start during his world-record run in May was flawless and he has figured out how to achieve great turnover with his long stride. This is something every sprinter would like to have.

Weaknesses: Inexperience is the only weakness I can see. This will be his first major championships at 100 and his first Olympics.

Advice: Bolt should approach the final as just another race. He should expect to execute his race in the same way he did when he ran 9.76 and 9.72 this year. He must not pay any attention to the other two. Bolt is my favourite for this race because he has the best physical tools to call upon, has the fewest weaknesses, and, right now, is the toughest mentally. Watch out for Walter Dix - the young US sprinter could take a medal.

After watching the second round I think Dix is the dark horse, because he had a bad start and still finish really well also he appear to be more fit then he was at trails.

Top 3:
1: Gay
2: Bolt (Could be the spoiler)
3: Dix

Sorry but even before the semis…how culd one think bolt would be a spoiler???

These were not the US Trials. It is Beijing time. Fast forward a couple of months.

Now, I am eagerly awaiting to hear about those “secrets”.

Gay is out of the final! whoa

1-bolt 2-powell 3-maybe patton in 3rd

I didn’t do a top nine, but Burns was my ninth pick. So far my picks are pretty golden, except for Gay. Yikes. I can’t wait to see how this turns out. Its going to be very close.

-Guy

disappointing about gay. he was all over the shop. relative to his usual form he looked terrible. what a come down it has been for him after running 9.77 and 9.68w at the trials. he went from 100/200 hopeful to a final no show and it’s all down to that injury in the 200m… :frowning:

This has been a complete disaster. A guy had switched his times from 9.70 to 9.78. Then switched his places from Powell winning to bolt winning to powell winning.

Guys picks…

  1. Asafa Powell JAM 9.78
  2. Usain Bolt JAM 9.79
  3. Tyson Gay USA 9.85
  4. Frater 9.89 JAM
  5. Patton USA 9.93
  6. D. Atkins BAH 10.00
  7. Walter Dix USA 10.03
  8. Martina 10.05
  9. Burns 10.12

Actual result…
1 Usain Bolt JAM 9.69 (WR)
2 Richard Thompson TRI 9.89 (PB)
3 Walter Dix USA 9.91 (PB)
4 Churandy Martina AHO 9.93 (NR)
5 Asafa Powell JAM 9.95
6 Michael Frater JAM 9.97 (PB
7 Marc Burns TRI 10.01
8 Darvis Patton USA 10.03

I quit.

I’d love to have watched Gay’s reaction to that final!
BBC showed a clip of MJ going crazy during the race, a little similar to how we all reacted 12 years ago to his 19.32!

I wonder how crazy he’ll be going whenever Bolt smashes his 200m record.
