Nutrition Books?

Does anyone have any recommendations for aggressive nutrition books? I’m looking for a little more then what the Nancy Clark “Sports Nutrition Guide” has to offer.

try entering the zone by barry sears and add a postworkout drink. Sears has worked with olympic athletes. MO Greene follows this diet.

Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon (places strong emphasis on the need for animal fats and proteins and fermented foods, very interesting)

Color Code (importance of phytochemicals)

Hey Fluke, there is a decent book out there called
Optimum Sports Nutrition by Dr. Micheal Colgan. Its a good source of Nutritional knowledge and was published in 1993 within a 10 year period therefore it is still considered fairly recent in the scientific community of Health Sciences. But bare in mind that alot of the studies he uses as evidence to back his claims are very old, some dating back to the 60’ and 70’s.
Hope this helps.

FYI: Colgan has an even more recent nutrition book out called the New Sports Nutrition I believe.

Pete thanks for the suggested readings.

I have a BS in Exercise Physiology, so I only have a basic idea on nutrition.

I might order “Natural Hormonal Enhancement” and “The Color Code” today. I could let you know what I think by the time I finish them at least a month or two from now, but they have been recommended by good sources (Kyle and Clemson) so you might not want to wait for that.

i read the colour code, a pretty dry read but tons of good info. it makes alot of sense and has helped me overhaul my diet. its tough to read start to finish but its an easy “spot read” really great to have around as a source of reference.

i have “serious nutrition for serious athletes” by dan benardot. he is the nutritionist for the us gymanastic team.

has anyone else read this one? comments?

Sports Nutrition Guide: Minerals, Vitamins & Antioxidants for Athletes
by Michael Colgan

Dear Tom:

What is your opinion of the “Sports
Nutrition Guide” by Colgan?

716,
What would your reccomendations be ?

716-

Sorry for the late response-

Got the opportunity to review Colgan’s Sports Nutrition Guide.

I enjoyed Optimum Sports Nutrition published in 1993- the text was well referenced yet straight to the point and easy to read.

The 2002 Sports Nutrition Guide does not disappoint by keeping up with changes in the industry and research (now names specific compounds in recommendations).

Has a good chart early in the text on the complete recommendations of the Colgan Institute for athletes.

On changes in the text-

Of particular interest would be the sections on creatine.

The one area that caught my attention was Colgan’s change of views on soy protein-

I still have mixed emotions on the use of soy (hormonal wildcard) with speed and power athletes.

His recommendations for athletes has changed slightly over the years-

Magnesium-1993

400-1200mg/day

Magnesium-2002
(Aspartate, Ascorbate)

400-1800mg/day

In the 2002 Edition (now has specific compounds)-

15-50mg of Zinc as Zinc Picolinate

1-3mg of Copper as Copper Gluconate

716 your thoughts on the text and the recommendations?
