'Not Dead Yet!

As with every first Journal Post, this one will be the longest, hah!

So… I thought I was done. Every time I worked out I was sore for 3-4 days afterwards, and that makes any kind of training depressing and nigh impossible.

I sat on my problem for a year. Focused on other things in my life. Got ready to start coaching.

Then I sent a message Kitkat about my problem. Found out I could either be really sick, or i just had a calcium difficiency.

I’ve been training this week, and while the workouts themselves weren’t that impressive the fact that I did them has made me happier than I’ve been in a long time.

My Goals:
Compete in an Open 400m this summer
Compete in an Open 800m this summer

Monday: 4 mile fartlek. It was ugly. My friend bobby couldn’t keep up with me, so rather than push it on my own, I hung back and talked with him (increased recovery time?)

Wednesday: Full warmup. 6x100m curves and straights at stride pace.

When I started the workout, I jogged the curves. By halfway through the second lap, I had started to walk >_>

Friday: Full warmup 1-2-3-2-1-2

Edit: During the last three legs of the ladder, my glutes and adductors really started to tighten up. I adjusted my effort and relaxation to make sure they didn’t get any more than uncomfortable.

I was dying during and after the workout. Felt like I had ran a race. I feel fine now, though.

Also, my right arch is aching a little bit. It’s kind of a welcome pain, though. Like coming back into your home town and finding the same old dumbass friend still hangin’ out at the same place doin’ his dumbass shit.

Good to see you back, Palmtag!

I concur… you were missed.

I got distracted by the rest of my life enough to not focus on finding out what the problem with my body was…I just assumed I was done. It is an incredible feeling knowing I’m not.

Monday 2-4-08
Workout: 4xCore Circuit

30X4 Ab-motions
7x4 Pullup
20x4 Hindu Squat (body squat)
20x4 Pushup

The workout was fun. I worked out with my friend Bobby. He needs to get back in shape for TPA nationals this summer. He does Kajekenpo, and is pretty good. He’s also the only person I could find that’s more out of shape than I am.

The hindu squats killed me, though I shouldn’t’ve done them. We had to jump a fence to get into the pool area where the pullup bar was. When I went over the wall, I was really clean and smooth gettin’ up and over. When I tried to get back over… I was flailing and gasping. It was sad. But I realized I couldn’t jog to the track and do a quick warmup-cooldown because both of my quads tightened up on impact!

So I’m sittin’ here in my room. With tight quads… Typing up this very sad workout.

Totals:

Hang in there, it does get better

I wonder if a year of not training resets my training age to zero… but this whole thing makes me think that training age is really a bunch of crap that some lazy coaches made up so they could quantify a variety of unquantifiable variables.

Wednesday 2-6-08

Workout: 4.5 mile run @35 mins, 7x10 Pushups

My quads were still a bit sore, but I needed to run anyway. I knew i wouldn’t be able to handle anything quicker than a run, so that’s exactly what I did. 35 minutes and 4.5 miles worth. It was invigorating, really. I mean except for the whole getting exhausted and my muscles getting tired, I really enjoyed it. I kept the distance short to show mercy on my foot, and it worked. I was able to finish the whole run with clean form and upright posture and at a good pace. I don’t think I’ll be doing any distance running that requires me to go so hard I’ll break down on the last leg of the run.

Weekly Totals
4.5 miles

LOL! Welcome back!

Workout: 10 min run Full Warmup (Duckwalks, A Skip, B Skip -ouch-, buttkicks, backwards run, Kareokee, highknee skip) 10x100m strides on grass. slow accell to 30m maintain. 6x10 pushups, 5x20 ab-movements, 4x30sec bridges, 10 min run

Yeah… so doing my warmup is a workout. That makes me feel real great. :stuck_out_tongue: The strides were okay, but I’ve never had that much trouble doing them since my freshman year. the first 5 were about 30sec rest, then the last 5 were walkback recovery. >_< My right adductor(s) got a little bit tight. My right leg still twists laterally when irun, which means my adductor has to twist it back in order for my knee to articulate correctly… so it gets sore. Yah.

Totals
3 Training Days. not bad. My body feels okay, and I’m not breaking down. Might do 4 days next week. But I think 3 weeks in a row of 3/week to be on the safe side.

Yes. And your lack of fitness may actually be a positive in that it forces you to slowly build back up. Your body loses not only the ability to go hard, but the ability to tolerate hard training (and speed) as well. Don’t be in a hurry --let your joints, etc. get used to the new demands.

2-11-08 Monday

Workout: Full Track Warmup: 10 minute run: Agilities, 10x100m strides on grass, 8x10 pushups, 120 ab movements, 10 minute run, static stretches

I felt great today. When I was warming up and doing my agilities, I felt more limber and my muscles felt more primed than they have felt in a hundred years. The strides felt really clean because I started the workout with full walkback recovery, and I was able to do every rep properly. I could have gone for more repeats, but I held back and stopped at ten.

The pushups and crunches were easier than a long time.

Good signs  I’m going to do my best to keep this up for this week. Next week, I’m going to start working out on Sunday as well as M-W-F.

2 Calcium Supplement “Everyday Calcium”
2 Glucosamine Supplement “Osteo Bi-Flex”
325mg Asprin

It’s 5:30AM… I have yet to go to sleep.

I think I figured out why I stayed up so late every night last semester: I would eat a huge amount of food around 10:30PM. Pizza works way better than caffine. Yeah. I’m not doing this ever again. I think I just killed my training day.

…it’s 5.30am and I’m up for the day :stuck_out_tongue: been awake for 90 mins

Well, not surprisingly I was a bit slack on my workouts the past couple days.

Let me outline it generally:

I worked out every other day since last Monday. I ran either 3-5 miles or did a full track warmup, etc.

Since Monday, my arch has been acting very angry. Not that big of a deal, but it has affected me a bit. I’ve been icing and asprin to keep the swelling down. Also, the calcium helps tremendously. I wonder why I am so dependent upon it. Am I perhaps eating too much phosphorous in my diet? I would not be surprised.

Oh, and today I did the regular track warmup with 10 strides. When I was on stride #9, I felt like relaxing at the start, and then laying it down. I felt real strong, so I tried sprinting 100m all out. I was able to do it and not get hurt. (for the past few weeks my “top” gear has been out of reach b/c of just general weakness. It’s better now)

Oh well. Things are looking up.

Sunday 2-24-08
Workout: 6 miles, steady.

This workout was harder than I anticipated. Before, I’d been writing in my journal and telling myself that I’ve been doing 4-6 miles on my runs. But I went onto google’s pedometer and found the landmarks for a real 6-miler… >_< to think, this used to be a really reasy distance!

Oh well. At least, when I finished it I was tired =D

Body: Felt strong for most of it. It was a real struggle to finish the run. My joints, (left knee and right arch) started to ache plenty by the end. I’m not discounting that they need to be taken care of, but they used to do this for all of my long runs… Long Runs… crap… that was a 6-miler >_< I’m so out of shape.

Monday: 2-25-08
Workout: Track Workout: Warmup, agilities, 8x100y strides. cooldown

I lengthened my warmup and cooldown to a full mile. It is amazing what doing an honest mile does.

Body: I was pretty sore from yesterday. I was okay enough to do a few strides, but not enough to really push on any of them, or to do any kind of workout after the strides. A bit tight in my adductors, the usual.

Wednesday: 2-27-08
Workout: Track Workout: Warmup, agilities 5x100y strides, ladder, cooldown.

100+100+100-
100+200+100
200+100+200
100+100+100

Today was a tough workout. In my strides, I have a cruising speed, it has to be pretty fast, or I would have too much acceleration to do for the 30-40 yards or so where I go fast. I tried to do every leg of the workout at that cruising pace or faster. It was a struggle. But I was able to do it.

Body: My adductor was acting a bit bitchy… so I made sure to stretch it well post-workout. It is fine now.

NOTE: I have been taking supplements on workout days only. Usuall doses. See previous posts. I haven’t changed anything.

Friday 2-29-08

Workout: 6 miles steady

Every step is precious. I was pretty sore today. I could have gone for longer, but my form would’ve started to break down. I turned around at 3.0miles

My right arch is a bit tight/sore right now. It should be okay by sunday when I go for my next steady run.

I got new shoes today.

Monday 3-3-08

Workout: 1mile run, agilites

2x20m flies
35 crunches
2x20-20-20 in-outs
35 crunches 20 pushups
2x30m rolling/falling starts
45 crunches 50 pushups

1 mile run

Heh, not surprisingly, my top speed is pretty slow, so I’m able to get up to it rather quickly. I was tightening up in my calves near the end, and I wasn’t able to stay relaxed so I cut it off at the volume I did.

I finished with the usual cooldown.

Tuesday 3-4-08
Workout: 6 Miles Steady

The run today was much easier than before. I knew the landmarks I was running too, and even if I did get a bit tight in the shoulders near the end, I was able to keep a clean running form for the entire run.

My left arch is aching a litle bit. I think from the new shoes I got, however, overall, the new shoes have helped me feet/legs immensely.

Wednesday 3/5/08
Workout: 1mile Agilities, 7x200m (1:30-2:00 recovery), 100 ab motions, 50 pushups. 1 mile walk…

So I finally got my old ghetto stopwatch to work, and i think it was a mistake >< I got a chance to work out only after the sun had set, so I had to go to our semi-lit practice track. The watch got me way to excited, so rather than running a solid workout and then going for a nice cooldown, I pounded out the last few reps, had my gastroc cramp on me, and walked the whole way back to my dorm room --’ I feel dumb.

Regardless, I think my splits were pretty good.

37, 35, 35, 35, 32, 29, 30. The first four felt stupid easy. Which is why I pushed it…

Oh well.

My left arch was a bit sore to start the workout, but pain faded by the end. It was fine during the walk back too.
