Nigerian trials in July

LAGOS, June 6 (Xinhua) – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) on Friday announced that the athletes who will represent the country at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be selected at the Mobil track and field trials slated for Abuja in July.

Mariah Wophill, Secretary General of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria, told Xinhua that the federation was making serious plans to ensure a good outing in Beijing in August.

According to Wophill, an undecided destination training tour was on the cards:rolleyes: WTF  , adding that the Mobil trials will help to select the best athletes who will go for the tour.

She said the Abuja camp for athletics has come alive after several athletes arrived on Wednesday to join their local colleagues.

Nigeria's greatest medal prospects in track and field are in the men's 100 meters and the men's and women's 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

It is expected that Olusoji Fasuba, Africa's fastest man, will face stiff competition for a medal from the likes of new world record holder at 9.72 seconds, Usain Bolt, his Jamaican compatriot Asafa Powell and American Tyson Gay.

Wophil is confident Fasuba and the Nigerian athletics team is capable of an impressive outing.
