Habu Gumel, President, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), says Olusoji Fasuba’s victory at the 12th IAAF World Indoor Championships will spur Nigeria to victory at the 2008 Olympics.

The Nigerian sprinter, had last Friday, won the 60 metres event with 6.51 seconds in the event held in the Spanish city of Valencia.

“Fasuba’s victory will enhance Nigeria’s preparations for the Olympic games. His performance will motivate the rest of the Nigerians athletes.

“We are happy with his performance and we will do everything possible to support him and all the other athletes,” Gumel told journalists in Abuja.

Gumel said the country’s preparations for the August Games were in top gear, noting that a good number of the athletes for the Olympic were already in camp.

“Only a few qualifiers are yet to be completed. We believe that by the end of March, all of them would have ended and we will know where we are.

“By then, all athletes will be in camp and we will start going for the training tours,” said the NOC boss.

Gumel, who is also the Director of Facilities in the National Sports Commission, said the NOC had begun the accreditation of athletes for the Games.

that should help Olu’s preparation

Yeah, now that he is a proven performer, Nigeria will step in and try to ride the bandwagon for any possible glory associated with future success. Where were they when he was scraping by but still very successful? He’s a world indoor champion and NOW they decide to “help” him-lucky him.

they said they’d help but there’s no mention of what that ‘help’ would be. Perhaps advise…

Maybe a fresh new singlet?
