A possible new Carl Lewis emerged at the US National Collegiate Champs in Des Moines in the person of Zimbabwe’s Ngonidzashe Makusha. The 24 year-old Florida State student, who placed fourth in the 2008 Olympic long jump, won that event with a national record leap of 8.40 with a zero wind reading in the fourth round (followed by an 8.36), and passed up his sixth attempt as the final stages of the event were held over until the following day because of a series of electrical storms. He elected to rest instead and came back with a storming finish to take the 100m on a wet track in 9.89, a collegiate and national record. Astonishingly, his best time before this year was merely 10.52 from 2007! The only men previously to have completed that NCAA double were DeHart Hubbard, Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis. Makusha also ran a leg on the winning 4x100m relay team, his colleagues including Maurice Mitchell, the 200m winner in a windy 19.99.
