EATON SCORES 8457 IN NCAA DECATHLON
Ashton Eaton (22), the world indoor heptathlon record holder, took another step forward in his decathlon career by winning the NCAA title with a pb score of 8457, just short of Bryan Clay’s world leading 8483. Held back only by his weak shot putting, he amassed 4500 points on the first day, including such sparkling marks as 10.37 for 100m, 7.90 long jump and 46.28 400m. He began the second day brilliantly with a 13.68 hurdles but the discus and javelin are poor events for him and he was way below his pole vault best. Another performance of the highest calibre was a pb 21.97 shot put by Ryan Whiting, second on the world list to Cory Martin’s 22.10. Whiting’s big throw came in the final round after having earlier improved his best to 21.75 and 21.78. Kirani James (17) from Grenada, the World Youth champion, took the 400m title in 45.05, just outside his best times of 45.01 and 45.02. Calvin Smith Jr (44.81 this season) placed only fourth in 45.37 but next day blasted a 43.69 relay anchor. Queen Harrison reigned supreme in the hurdles department, taking the 400m in a pb of 54.55 the day before running 12.67 for 100m. Another fine double winner was Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare, who took the 100m in a windy 10.98 and next day long jumped 6.79. No fewer than 15 titles were won by non-American athletes.
