Well, I’m starting a log to record my workouts and track progress. I should be able to update this regularily, and I’ll try my best to. Thanks to all that decide to read this. Right now I’m just lifting, since the added strength would help when I’m playing sports, but maybe in the future I’ll add other stuff too. I’m 15 years old and pretty skinny, 5’10’’ (no shoes) and 130lbs right now .
I originally was going to start lifting yesterday, but I didn’t plan correctly and ran out of time. But today I begun lifting. Bear with me, my numbers on the lifts are terrible, I’m as close to a bare beginner as you can get without being one. Today I did a short workout, it was only 30 minutes long (but it felt like 2 hours  :o ), with only 3 lifts. Here’s how it went:
Deadlifts- 3x8 @ 120lbs, 120lbs, 120lbs
Close Grip Bench Press- 2x10 @ 60lbs, 60lbs
Bent Over Barbell Rows- 2x10 @ 60lbs, 60lbs
Yep, pretty low weight :o , but that’ll change with hard work. The deadlifts went pretty well (aside from the low weight), although my grip on the bar was kinda shaky. Hopefully that wont’ be a problem in the future. As far as the benching and rowing, I think I may have messed up and took too little rest in between or something. For both lifts the first set of ten was easy (I probably had 2-3 reps left in me), but them when I tried the second sets, it was a lot harder than it should have been. I’ll keep that in mind next time.
Dude, that looks like a good starting point. I’m a huge fan of the deadlift. In my opinion, the deadlift is one of the two best lifts you can do for overall body strength. Deads work nearly every muscle in your body, especially the core. Don’t forget what I said about lifting for STRENGTH vs. just mindlessly pumping away light weights. For your deads, make sure you keep the reps under control, don’t do too many. After your break in period, you can adjust to heavier weight and lower reps.
One of the best resources on developing pure strength is the Russian strength guru Pavel Tsatsouline and his book Power to the People. He explains the deadlift better than anyone, in my opinion, at least. But, all that will be down the road a while. Just keep doing what you’re doing and keep asking us questions and letting us know how your going…
Thanks for the advice and encouragement . Yeah, deadlifts are amazing. In my opinion they’re the best lower body strength move, and atleast top 3 for upper back (in addition to the Lower Back and P-chain work it gives). I’m looking foreword to lower the reps on them when I’m done the small preparation period. They’re so hard with high reps  ! I’m probably going to try doing weights sessions with a 5x5 and 4x6 setXrep scheme for a while (after the preparation weeks), them lower the reps further for a few weeks and then see where I should go from there.
Well, today was an off day between lifting sessions, so I just did a light, short core workout as well as some footwork drills for the fun of it. For the core work I did very little:
Standing Dumbell Side Bends-3x20 @ 20lbs
Standing Full Contact Twists-2x15 @ 30lbs
I definately could’ve used more weight on these. I didn’t do any truck flexion work, just lateral flexion and rotation, but I’ll do some before I sleep tonight. I’ll probably keep my core work at bodyweight next time. Looking foreword to lifting tomorrow!
