That is a clip of my training partner/rival working on his starts (doubt he is doing them at over 80% though). He figures if he can have great starts going up a grassy (trus me this grass is high and dense, jus check how deep his foot sinks down, it looks easier to run on than it is) slope then he can hit it when he gets on the track.
We were neck and neck growing up but around the age of 9 he started pulling away and now always demolishes me (and everybody else in the country). He is the top under 17 runner we have right now.
He has mad top end speed but poor starts in comparison. Working on it though. Another obstacle is that he is always plagued by injury because he neglects proper pre-race warm up cause he knows he will win anway, but he has had to pay the price after.
His start is much like mine. The start isn’t horrible, it’s decent. After the start he looked pretty good, it seems to me that once he gets going(Much like J.Gatlin)he’s going to be hard to beat. By the way what are his PB’s?
I kno it isnt horrible, its just not so good compared with his top speed and it was much worse when he set his p.b’s. His pb’s are 10.4, 21.8 Those p.b’s were set last year. He has been on and off injury this year, but he is fully rehabilitated now, and feeling faster. Says he is aiming for sub 10.2 and sub 21.5 next year. I believe he can do it, cause he always deliberately slows down with about 10-20 meters to go because of the lack of competition and he did so when he set those pb’s.
He got the speed, quickness.
His right arm is not being explosive, you can see this from frame to frame, so, when he pushes his from leg ( right ) and then pulls the left ( rear ) his right arm should be moving forward strongly but he isn´t.
Ben use to start like this ( somekind )…
Alright, ill tell him about the arm thing, one thing I noticed also is that he has a start off, he completely ignores his hands and just pushes off with his legs, so he actually starts swinging his hands after both feet are clear of the start. Sometimes it causes an imbalance where he completely stumbles out. But thats in the blooper vid. lol.
I told him bout the hand thing, he said he corrected it and also the lack of hand movement when he just starts, he did rigourous training on it when he went to the IAAF World Youth Championships in Morroco this year, but due to a very serious recurring lower back injury, he didnt even make it past the first round. But he is all rested and rehabilitated now.
Once my ankle heals and I can fully get back to training my first goal is to train hard enough to beat him at National Champs next year. If i can do that in a blistering time then the rest will be history, im out to put SVG on the map.
look at his starting position.look at his arms in regards to his knee in the start position.way ahead!! now in set position look at his angles.front leg is way to open, back leg is nearly straight and where will the power come from???
the general guidelines for starting is…is the blocks try to have your lead knee close to your arms.make sure your arms are running straight from top to bottom.in set…the angles are usually 90* front and 135* back…if you can get these angles you are not far wrong.raise your hips till you achieve these angles.his arm action is lazy…
his arm vs leg co-ordination over the first 3strides(look at his 3rd stride and his right arm) is way out and overall when he gets up and running he is just ok.mechanically he needs work overall on all aspects.tell me…what sort of injuries has he
also you say the grass is long…thats short compared to what we used to train on before a track was built.
Yea, im mechanically the better sprinter but he has crazy raw speed. Ill tell him all of this, and the injuries he had are lower/mid back injuries, and quadriceps injuries. But their all rehabilitated now.
daniel post your video clip and we’ll help you.why should you help someone whom you compete against and whom washes the floor with you.help yourself get fast…post a clip of yourself and well guide you in the right direction.
Alright, as soon as my ankle is healed I will. I have few of me but these are at 50-60% effort on a short runway so it makes no sense (if u still wanna c them tell me) The way my ankle is going i should be back training by october.
The reason Im helping him is because, weve bin best of buddies since i was 5 years old and he is my training partner. Even though I want to beat him badly ill still help him because he is the future of St. Vincent sprinting (until i reach his level and I will), and I gotta tink of my country first.
Dont worry im not to far off of him now, the reason he pulled away from me at around 9-10 years old is because he naturally developed faster, but since last summer to now ive bin steadily developing and now im 6ft sum and my muscles are much more developed, got faster. In the 100m semi-final of the school sports in March I was running at about 85% and I could tell he was at about 95% and I was just a 1/2 meter off him, In the final i was ready to take him after years of domination but I pulled up with a cramp since it the first time in months I was giving it 110%. Imma be ready for him next time though.
Until then Were training partners and representatives for our country so we gotta focus on helping each other, he helps me out with my speed endurance alot to. U see he wants my perfect starts, and I want his crazy strong finishes, so we gotta help each other out.
daniel only post 95%+ runs as this is when you can see all.with minor adjustments your friend can have better and more consistant starts which canbe changed within a single session.listen to the advice i have given you as these are the very basic in start technique.
as soon as you recovery and rehab properly post a clip of yourselve running and we can help you.
Tanxs for all ur help man, ill try to incorporate all that uve said to the best of my abilities. By the way what are the best angles to film the video at? side, front, back, diagonal?
Yea man, i got a 3 megapixel cam, and I put it on the best resoultion, then it is transfer to Windows Media Player Video format. Very clear, if uve seen any of my vids then ull know what I mean, check in the “Running in my yard, want a critique)” post, the last clip i posted there, should still be within expiry.
