Posta’s Grace Kidake once again stole the show at a New KCC/Athletics Kenya fifth weekend athletics meeting whose podium was dominated by Prisons team.
Posta athlete wins five races, misses Africa event slot as Prisons dominate
Mombasa Municipal Stadium on Saturday.
The human resource person at the giant corporation dominated the previous four weekend meetings this year. At the weekend meeting in Mumias, Kidake beat Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo in 400m.
She was unstoppable in all the track events although she fell short of qualifying times for the 17th African Athletics Championships in Nairobi in July, blaming a poor track and excessive heat.
Kidake easily won the 100m event in 12.8 seconds, the 200m in 25.8, 800m in 2:21.0, 400m hurdles in 1.08.2 and 400m in 56.0 without breaking a sweat.
Build-up and speed work
“I’m very sure I will attain the qualifying mark for the African championships in my specialities – the 100m and the 400m flat races – because I came very close to achieving this in Mumias when I managed 12.00 seconds instead of the 11.94 required in 100m and 54 instead of the 53 required in 400m,” she said.
The 25-year-old attributed her recent rise in form to a lot of build-up and speed work, said.
Kidake said she has been participating in five races to attain the much required stamina as part of practice owing to lack of competitions in her specialities at the moment.
Prisons made a podium sweep in the 100m though Stephen Baraza (10.7), Wellington Nyakundi (10.8) and Newton Rotich (10.8).
Nyakundi however avenged his loss in the 100m to win the 200m in 22.0, followed closely by Douglas Makori (22.2), an individual entrant from Kisii. Solomon Buoga (22.5) of Kenya Navy was third.
The Prisons team continued its dominance in 4x100m relay, easily winning in 42.1, followed by Mombasa (46.5) in a distant second while Ninja were third in 55.9.
Hussein Kambi of Municipal Council of Mombasa (MCM) won the men’s javelin in 50.85 metres, followed by the Prisons duo of Edwin Kemei (50.56m) and Samuel Korir (46.0m).
Janet Kiptoo (Prisons) won the women’s javelin, throwing 34.30m, with team mate Agnes Kilundo second in 33.6m. Roseline Bundo (23.27m) of MCM was third.
Coast Provincial Commisioner Ernest Munyi, who was the chief guest, however raised concern over the small number of Coast athletes present and urged them to develop an interest in the sport, which he said had become employment in it own right.
