Injury ends Greene’s indoor campaign
Tuesday 18 February 2003
Raleigh, North Carolina, USA – Maurice Greene, the World and Olympic 100m champion and World Indoor 60 metres record holder has confirmed that he sustained a slight pull in his calf last weekend, and consequently he would take no further part in this indoor season.
Greene said the injury occurred during Saturday’s Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville (15 Feb). There, for the second race in a row he finished third, on that occasion in 6.50, behind Terrence Trammell’s world season’s 6.46 seconds lead (he also beat Greene in New York) and John Capel (6.48).
His coach, John Smith, did not believe there was sufficient time for Greene to recover fully before the U.S. indoor championships in Boston at the beginning of March.
Greene, in a statement released by his club HSI, confirmed, “I felt a slight pull towards the end of the race, it didn’t feel like much at the time, but by the end of the night, it had become much worse.”
“I’m disappointed that I will not be able to continue my indoor season, but I want to concentrate on getting healthy and
accomplishing my goals for outdoors.”
