VICTORIA, British Columbia, July 20 (AFP) - NicolasMacrozonaris won the 200 metres at the Canadian Track and Field Championships, becoming the first since Ben Johnson complete the sprint double.
Macrozonaris, who won the 100m on Saturday, joins aselect list that includes Johnson (1985 and 1987) but also Percy Williams (1928), Desai Williams(1979, 1980, and 1983), Harry Jerome (1960, and 1966) and Johnson’s trainer Charlie Francis (1970 and 1971).
Macrozonaris, who rarely runs the 200, clocked a timeof 20.85 seconds. He won the 100m in 10.13.
In the women’s sprints, Erica Witter captured the 200min 23.34. She also won the 100m on Saturday.
Macrozonaris, 22, will join 800m runner Diane Cummins,ranked fourth in the world, and the worlds third-rankedhigh jumper Mark Boswell on Canada’s team which willcompete in the world championship next month in Paris.
Canada’s team will consist of about two dozenathletes.
Some of Canada’s athletes plan to compete next monthin the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo with the hopeof making the final qualification standards for theParis worlds.
