SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Defending Olympic champion Marion Jones pulled out of the 200 meters at the U.S. track and field trials Saturday, but did not immediately say why.
Her lawyer, Rich Nichols, said Jones would have a news conference later in the day.
Jones finished last in her five-woman heat in the quarterfinals of the 200 on Friday. It wasn’t clear whether she was hurt or simply coasting because she knew she could advance to the semifinals without much effort.
Jones, who already is on the Olympic team in the long jump, failed to qualify in the 100 - in which she also is the defending champion - a week ago at the trials.
Barring a drastic change in the makeup of the 100 squad, Jones will not be defending either of her Olympic sprinting titles at the Athens Games.
