India Youth Nationals

Neethu, Shejil set Indian youth (under-18) bests
Thursday 26 October 2006
Kerala’s Neethu Mathews triple jumped 12.73m while her compatriot Shejil Varghese clocked 53.63 secs in the Boys’ 400m Hurdles to set national youth bests in the 3rd National Youth Athletics Championships which concluded in Warangal, India, on Wednesday (25 Oct).

Neethu Mathews, bronze medallist at last year’s junior nationals in Chennai, dominated the day, erasing state-mate Tincy Mathews’ two year old record of 12.64m. Her effort brought her the best athlete award of the meet.

Shejil Varghese had a “double-treat” as he won both the 400m flat and hurdles events, similar to that of Orissa’s Jauna Murmu in the girls’ division.

Other double winners included Naveen Kumar (Shot Put and Discus Throw) for boys and G. Naglakshmi (100m and Long Jump) for girls.

Goan shot putter Steffi Cardozo, who achieved a personal best 12.71m just two weeks ago in Lusofonia Games at Macau, had no serious challengers as she walked away with the title with a heave of 12.42m.

Kerala hurdler Jincemon Joy was adjudged as best athlete among boys. Haryana and Tamil Nadu lifted the boys and girls team titles respectively while Kerala State was runners-up in both the divisions.
