Hooray Calcium

So for the past year or so I’ve been trying to get back into working out. Only, as I think I’ve posted once before in the injury clinic, I get extremely sore after each workout. I’ve tried increasing my sleep, getting a more rounded clean diet… (lean meats, dark veggies, etc.) I was just about hopeless I couldn’t work out 2 days in a row because I was just too sore after each workout. It would normally take me 2-5 days to recover from every exercise session because I was just so sore.

I brought the question straight to Kitkat, and he mentioned that Charlie had a similar situation with Ben back in 89, and that he took calcium (5g) to help. He also suggested I go to a sports doctor and get a blood profile, but that’s not in my budget unfortunately :frowning: So! I just took 5g of calcium, and I’ve noticed a very big difference in my recovery times.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Recomended amount of calcium?

normally, calcium/magnesium tabs are better, the combination of the two work better for homeostasis.

It sure works a treat in reducing Pain and loosens tight muscles like a treat hey!!

I recommended Calcium and insisted it be chelated with Vitamin D. You are correct (I believe) on the mag. content, but from what I’ve seen most Calcium tabs come mixed with an appropriate ratio of magnesium and also chelated with D.

Yes, correct re the Vit D, and yes, most do come with Magnesium - however, there are Mag only and calcium only versions too. Not as popular, but they still seem to be around.

Bromelain is awesome for reducing muscle swelling in regards to hard sessions too. On an empty stomach though!! otherwise its benifits are reduced to a stomach digestive instead

The supplement I’m taking has all three!

Vitamin D (as D3 Cholecalciferol) 200IU
Calcium (Citrate, Amino Acid Chelate, Carbonate) 1200mg
Magnesium (Oxide, Amino Acide Chelate, Aspartate) 1200mg

The Brand is Rainbow Light: Everday Calcium.

sweet - dont know about the name though, Rainbow Light… :stuck_out_tongue:

5Grams though!! Thats a lot - basically 4tabs per day - do you only take them on Intensive days?
I find, once loosness and pain has left, a maintenance level of 1 tab per day is normally fine, with two thrown in when its been a hard session or extra stresses are making you a tad tight again.

Perhaps drop one tab at a time to find the minimum dose - Expensive and not really needed otherwise - 5g that is. You might need to drink more water too, on that high a dose.

I’m only taking it like that for the first 3 days. Today is the last day that I’m keeping it up like that. I’m going to reduce it to 1pill a day.

What is this I hear about “5g a day of calcium” ? Is that supposed to be a short term thing?

I would like to know what benefits there are to this as well.

Yes 5 grams does seem like a really high dose! Why take so much, Palmtag? Is it just because that dose works for you, or is it because Charlie used that dose with Ben in '89?

Well, for starters, Ben was busy doing other things in 89. He for sure was not competing and Charlie was not coaching him after 88.

Secondly, 5grams Calcium was a crisis dosage, to be used as a one-off. Thereafter the advice was to supplement with 1 gram per week (not even per day).

Yeah OK. Why is a “crisis-dosage” required? And why is it 5 grams? :).

Ask the recipient on why it was necessary. He was badly depleted, hence all the symptoms of tightness everywhere, failure to recover from any kind of session over a period of some months.

As for dosage, as a one-off, that comes from experience. Been there, done that. It worked for Ben. It worked for my top guy. It worked for others. But you drink a lot of fresh water with it. You then go down to 1gram per week as a basic maintenance dosage.

And you do NOT try to make up your calcium by hitting the dairy products. As an adult, you’ll end up with “stones” (kidney or gall, can’t recall?) so I was advised by a MD who is also a naturopath.
