I especially like Charlies’ question/answer on top speed:
Is the volume of high intensity work too much for your group to handle? Are the rest periods between intervals too short? You should be completely recovered between intervals! Is your weight training compromising your speed? A large volume of high intensity lifting will certainly compromise your top speed.
He is refering more to the SPP-phase than the GPP-phase though…
I believe those statements to be true regardless of phase. For example: “A large volume of high intensity lifting will certainly compromise your top speed.” Whether you are in SPP or Comp.
Btw top speed is usually not the focus in GPP.
