Gym Rant

Here it goes again, I’m pissed off and irritated.

I have been lifting at this gym, and there is this huge body building guy who I notice that kind of keeps watch of me. He works at this gym, and it just seems like everytime I walk in that gym he hides out on the side and watches me as he trains other people.

This guy is big as a house (muscular/250lbs), but for some reason I only see him do cable machine work. I can’t stress how big/puffy this guy is, he’s an amateur bodybuilder but I looked him up on the internet and there is nothing on him. Also, he’s always training girls and he seems to think that he knows more then he really does.

Anyhow, I’m on the decline bench and I got 285 up no problem, I jump to 315 and I bombed it, but no worries. I’m lifting light (1 rep 2-3 sets) as I have a track meet next week. So as I’m putting the weights away, the big dude comes over to me and ask: “why so much weight?”.

Now I’m FLABBERGASTED, but still keep my composure and tell the guy in a cool manor that I train my CNC and that I’m not into building muscle or powerlifting. I’m then met by a still silence and a blank stare.

He then tells me the following:

  1. The decline bench is not a “power exercise” and that I need to use the flat bench.

  2. The decline bench is a “shape up” machine for the bottom pecs.

  3. He tries to discredit my strength saying that I probably could not lift the same amount of weight on the flat bench and that’s why many guys use the decline bench.

  4. I need to change my form and starts telling me that I need to bench in a way that utilizes a “spring action.”

  5. I’m using too much weight.

  6. I need to do dips and flys even though I already expressed that I’m not in the gym to build muscle mass.

I could not believe what I was hearing. WHO IS THIS GUY??? He’s a nobody, as in, he’s not an x pro athlete, nor does he have any people/records on the wall of the gym to prove that he knows what he’s talking about!

If anything I could have gave HIM and tip or two! He walks around wheezing pretty loud and it’s obvious he has some kind of respiratory problem due to his unnatural size. The dude needs to see a doctor real quick…

Ohh the “experts” are everywhere aren’t they? I recently had an old friend who recently became a Crossfit freak tell me that Crossfit is the best training to learn how to “run really fast.” Thanks for the tip, Mr. No Hip Mobility…

Crossfit is good for the general public if it keeps them training, but as the best way to train for running? I don’t fucking think so.

Tell me about it!

Crossfit today reminds me of the 1980’s aerobics craze. I remember as a little kid my mom in tights and Reebok classics going to aerobics class.

This article addresses the puffy gym guy’s comment “4. I need to change my form and starts telling me that I need to bench in a way that utilizes a “spring action.”” http://complementarytraining.blogspot.ca/2012/06/research-review-effects-of-different.html?spref=fb

I agree- if it gets people off the couch, I’m all for it, but when they start using the word “elite” to describe anything they do, I can taste a little bit of barf in my mouth.

Follow up your bench with weighted pull-ups. Strapping on a good amount of weight then pumping out reps usually shuts up the huge guys with poor power-to-weight ratios.
