KINGSTON, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Double world sprint champion Tyson Gay will start his 2008 Olympic athletics season at the Jamaica International Invitation meeting on May 3.

Gay, who beat Bahamian Derrick Atkins and world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica for the 100m world title in Osaka last year, will open in the 200m in Kingston, his coach Lance Brauman.

"The focus on our training right now, to this point has being on the US Championships, with in mind to run the very best at the Olympic," Brauman said on a local radio programme on Thursday.

Gay also won the 200m and 4x100m gold in Osaka.

With the 400 this weekend in Texas and possibly next, the 200 must be his progression in the long to short.

Gay To Run 4x1 At Texas, Wouldn’ Turn Down A 4x4 Leg
Tyson Gay Looks At Texas Relays Baton Duty

Tyson Gay, ’07’s double sprint No. 1 World
Ranker and T&FN Athlete Of The Year, plans to
open his ’08 season at the Texas Relays this weekend.

T&FN’s Sieg Lindstrom, spoke by phone with
Gay for an Olympic Trials Men’s 100 Preview that
will appear in the May issue of Track & Field News.

Gay recently traveled to Texas from his training base
in Florida, where he works with coach Lance Brauman,
for some practice with starts/technique consultant Jon
Drummond before he kicks off in Austin.

During the interview, Gay spoke briefly about
his planned Texas Relays opener:

T&FN: How would you rate your fitness compared
to this time last year?

Gay: My fitness level is pretty good. I would
say I’m just as good as I was last year; maybe a
little bit better in fitness; maybe a little bit. The
reason I say that is because I have run some 300s
and I ran a little bit faster than I did last year at
this time of the year.

I haven’t run any open events yet and I kind
of always base my season off my first open event,
which will be in Jamaica, May the 3rd, if I’m not
mistaken.

[Before that] I plan on running some 4x4s.
Hopefully, I can get in at least three 4x4s this
year and I think that will help my strength level.
That’s how I’m kind of going to base my [early]
season: off my 4x4 splits. I’m not looking to
split 43; it’s not my event.

I really believe that if you are a world-class
athlete you should be able to step into a 400
and run a decent time. So I’m looking forward
to splitting at least 45-low. Hopefully; I’ve never
done it before.

T&FN: Will you run the 4x4 this weekend?

Gay: I’m going to run the 4x1 and hopefully
the 4x4 if I get picked up on a team. I don’t really
have first dibs on a 4x4, but if they have any
spots left I’m definitely going to run the 4x4.

T&FN: I have a feeling they might try to fit you
into that race. The fans just might want to see what
you can do in a 400.

Gay: [Laughs].
