GAY: 'I can run 9.73'

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, June 20 Reuters - American sprinter Tyson Gay believes he can break the 100 metres world record at the US championships this week if conditions are favourable.
If the weather is nice, nice enough to give me maybe a 1.5 (metres per second tailwind), I think it is very possible I can break the world record,'' Gay said on Wednesday. You try not to think about it,’’ the 24-year-old added, but I think it is a possibility because I have been practising good, running some fast times in practice and I am healthy.'' The championships, which serve as the American trials for August's world championships in Osaka, Japan, begin on Thursday. The 100 metres finals are scheduled for Friday. I believe I can run 9.73 (seconds) or faster,’’ said Gay, who also hopes to make the US team in the 200 later this week.
That would be faster than Jamaican Asafa Powell’s 100 world record of 9.77 seconds, a mark Gay exceeded earlier this year although he was denied the record because of an assisting wind.

Hope he didn’t jinx himself here…

as long as he doesn’t end up on teh SI cover.

Run first and talk later- keep the pressure off!

True…run on the track then run up your gums…

I find it interesting that Tyson is doing a lot of talking this year…last year he was as quiet as a mouse…Looks like Gay is coming out…lol

Charlie how did you control Ben when he got hyped? Did he talk to the press much about how he felt? I mean he must have run plenty of great times in training!!

How relevant would you say times in training are? In reality there’s no one around so the dynamic and pressure would be different from a ‘race’ situation.

From the results so far, the wind is blowing in the good direction with +3m/s bursts… Maybe we’ll have a remake of Indy’88 in a male version!

yesss. 9.6, here we come  even if the wind gauge actually works properly there’s always the 9.69w wr target

Hum… unlike yesterday, today the wind is against for all the races so far… I hope it will change for the 100m final because the last 2 editions have been disturbed and we missed great times.

Well… women’s 200m had +2.3 and 10min later men had -1.6
