How you guys doing? I’m new at this site. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I am currently a division III football and track athlete. I play defensive back. I’m 5’9 weigh about 155-160 , about 9.5% body fat, and i ran a 4.4 hand time 40 last season. What is the best approach to gaining weight and also how much weight is to much before my speed is comprimised. My legs are pretty well developed, but my upper body is what I would like to improve.
I would concentrate on a general development program, which should strengthen all parts of the body. As you’re not too big, you needn’t worry about weight yet and some of the muscle mass you gain will be offset by fat loss. even pure sprinters your height can be 15 pounds heavier with no problem.
i agree (of course) with charlie. your frame can handle more muscle weight and it shouldnt hurt your speed. as long as the gains are muscle they should help your strength and explosiveness.
this will depend of course on a sound nutrition program and hitting the weight room hard (and properly). dont start to train like a bodybuilder just because you want to gain muscle, stay explosive.
when i want to add a few pounds i add some power moves (deadlifts, bench, squats, presses) to my olympic lifts for added muscle stimulation, and i tweak my diet for some extra quality calories.
I am at a similar height and weight - 5’8 155. I’d like to know at what point weight becomes a problem and more importantly why? Some factors that weight affects in running are air resistance, momentum, strength to weight ratio.
Barry Sanders was 5’8 and 200 lbs and considered one of the best runners in the game. Why could he hold so much weight without it affecting his speed or agility?

it amazing how these huge runningbacks can run so fast. its liek it shouldn’t be possible!
T.J. Duckett od MSU weight around 250 pounds and ran a 4.4
Maurice Clarett-6’ 230 pounds and runs a 4.4. and his junior year ran a 10.7. I know in elite terms that isn’t much but to me, a 10.7 at 230 pounds is quick!
I also read a 49ers defensive end runs a 4.4. 40 yard dash time and he is like 6’9 300 pounds or something like that.
don’t believe everything you read. each year there are 50 high school kids running 4.3s (according to superprep). but at the combines each year there is only 1 or 2 guys running sub 4.4.
