False starts at world champs.

I’ve watched the first and second round heats of the mens 100meters at the world championships in Paris. O.k, this’ll be old news within 24 hours but there was mega contreversey yet again.
John Drumond got disqualified for a “false start” and omited from the competition. to say he was upset is the understatement of the decade. he would not leave the tarck for about 30 minutes. Every time the race was set to start again the crowd bood becuase thy felt it was wrong for Drumond to be eliminated like that.
I have a question or two though. When they showed the replay of his false start, it showed a 0.05sec “reaction” although this could be debatable becuase:
He made a twitch in the set position, his heel moved back and set of the sensor pads, however his center of mass had not moved an inch before 0.10 sec. Drummond was absolutely convinced he had not false started, he was not acting any more.
I felt sorry for him, though the BBC commentry team, including Michael Johnson, Colin Jackson, Steve cram and Brendon Foster were showing no pity for him whatso-ever. Maybe it is me that has got it wrong here.
So anyway:
When a sprinter rises into the set position, they’re not allways going to have there heels back in line with the pedals/pads, just cuase the ball of there foot is. Then, if they suddenly twitch and re-alighn there heels is it possible that even this could trigger a “reaction” on the digital display?

As a side note, for anyone who hasn’t seen the quaterfinals, Kim Collins, Dwain C, Mo Green and Aliu were in the same quaterfinal! They all qualified for semi-final, and Collins was first across the line, folllowed by Dwain. Mo was just a few hundredths behind. Tim Montgommery has suddenly found some form and he won his quater final in about 10.03 seconds.
Kelli White won the womens 100meter final in 10.85seconds, Zhanna bloch got the bronze.

I too think Drummond was not at fault,

If u see the reply, drummond may have twitched but the guy who originally flase started, twitched also. I dont know much about body weights of these athletes , but could this be a reason for why more pressure was felt though Drummonds blocks? Obviously , the two athletes have different block positions, so would the way u set your blocks up and position your body, have a difference in the amount of movement you can get away with in the set positon?

Personally i think the origional false starter should have been dQ,
but thats only from a spectators point of view  lol

if anyone could shead some light on my insane theory,
let me know :wink:

on a sidenote unfortunately Pat johnson’s peaking failed again and lets hope he was still in heavy training and that one day when he comes off this heavy training he will run fast, preferably at a big meet!

John Drummond should be sanctioned and fined or banned for his actions that was ridiculous what he did and like it or not he is playing a game by a set of rules. There are proper channels to go through.

Also, the officials werent much better they could have handled it better but everyone was under pressure…and unfortunately Pat johnson succummed!

Is it time to come up with a new starting procedure. Yes JD foot moved but the rest off his body didn’t.

PJ stuffed up, learning experience for him.

Who looked the best TM, AB or others?. Could be an interesting final?

Womens final was a good result for US with Kelli White and Torri Edwards. Sturup missed the start and not as exciting in first half of her race as usual.

Just received this from Oztrack

Whoever wrote the story at ESPN is a LIAR!

I never admitted to false starting, because I DID NOT FALSE START!

First of all, I was advised by the coaches and USATF staff to stay on the
track until the appeal procees was done.

There is a rule that says the athlete can run under protest and the appeal
would take place after the race. That rule was not honored today! That is
why I laid on the track!

I left the track because I was advised by the USATF Director of Elite
athletes to do so, it was to “avoid further scandal” after the wind cleared,
it was in my best interest to do so!

Secondly, A flinch, until today, has never been considered a false start.
It was clear by the relplay that the person in lane 5 false started.

I will be on the relay.

We have tried with petitions and conversations to the “powers that be” and
at the end of the day it is there organization and they can do whatever they
like!

What went wrong was, incompetence!

JON DRUMMOND!

right on JD

MJ is such a player hater…

LOL, I think the IAAF should be fined for their incompetent handling of the situation not Jon Drummond who has stripped naked the most ridiculous rule ever imposed on the sport. The new false start rule is a farce! Hopefully after this disaster and truly embarrassing chapter to the sport we’ll get back to having sane rules.

Just a quick question down memory lane, When (year) and Where (major competition) was this new rule implemented?

thnaks

The rule only came in last year from memory.

So theorically this is the first major

I thought it was bullshit.

He was in the set position but he did not cross the plane whatsoever. So what if his foot shook while in the blocks. It NEVER came off the block at all.

It is the most RIDICULOUS thing I have ever seen.
ALSO

The guy in lane five false started. There should have been only one disqualification. They HAVE to get rid of that rule. It is utter horseshit. I was completely disgusted.

There were some nice times for a quarterfinal though hehe
Chris

That was unfortunate for John, as it appeared he only twitched, which should be allowed. To me, it looked like the guy in lane 5 false started. I hope this rule gets changed.

One commentator said that its the discretion of the juges where more then one person false starts as to who gets disqualified.

maybe a review of video evidence by the judges who have provided a different result. It looked as if a few of the guys were unsteady so maybe just a restart with everyone would have been the way to go.

Even though I think the officials could have used their discretionary powers better, I still think JD acted inappropriately and should be sanctioned. Powell took it on the chin, JD should have too.

Being dissapointed is one thing, wrecking it for everyone else is another. JD forgot that there was another 7 people there with the same dream and they deserved some respect, not a tantrum.

Fair enough the rule is crap and ever since they implemented it this was alwyas gonna happen. Drummond’s foot was flexing back and fore - at least a couple of times - changing the pressure like that on the blocks was playing with fire.

Btw … did you notice how lane 3 (Thomas) was constantly moving forward during the set position!
