Email spammer jailed, fined

NEW YORK, Nov 2 AFP - A 28-year-old man from the US state of New Jersey has been jailed for more than two years by a New York judge for his part in a spamming operation that sent out millions of unsolicited emails.
Todd Moeller was today sentenced to a 27-month term and fined more than $US180,000 after pleading guilty earlier this year to sending out spam emails.
Moeller was caught in a sting operation after agreeing to send junk email advertising an unspecified commercial product to around 1.2 million customers of internet service provider America Online (AOL).
Moeller and co-defendant Adam Vitale, who also pleaded guilty and is due to be sentenced on November 13, boasted that they were able to send large volumes of spam in a way that concealed the email’s true source.
Moeller and Vitale said they had made tens of thousands of dollars through their business.
Another US man was jailed for nine years in 2005 for violating anti-spam laws. Last year a Texas college student who led a massive spam email operation was fined more than $US10 million.

Wish they’d get the people spamming me! It’s amazing how they get past even good defenses.

I’m highly skilled at hitting the delete key these days. At least 2/3 of my email is junk!
