diet - help?

There seems to be a lot of knowledgable people here as far as nutrition is concerned. and I just have a few questions that maybe you guys could help me on. what I want to know is a) how much poor nutrition is holding me back b) what changes i can make in my diet and supplement intake.

I am 19 years old with pbs of 10.79 (1.8) 21.69 (3.1) 22.04 (0.1)

I noticed on this board there is always talk about % fat, % protein etc. I am not really familiar with this at all, i am trying to increase my protein intake and eat healthier foods in general but that about the only changes i have implemented in my diet.

On a good day my diet will be something like this

wake up at 9
2 hard boiled eggs with yogurt and cereal at 11
pasta and garlic bread at 2
at 7 chicken, green beans , rice and juice

I will have a scoop of protein before bed and throughout the day, vitamin C, multi -vitamins.

On a bad/average day my diet is like so:

wake up late (11)
pasta with garlic bread at 1 pm
cheesburger or grilled cheese with juice at 4pm
chicken or pasta for dinner at about 7- 9 (depending on practice)

Any help regarding my diet would be great, thanks guys.

It’s pretty difficult to judge how your eating habits might be holding you back, so i’m nt going to comment on that.

But a few things I noticed about what you said: for one in the first example you said that you wake up at 9(which you might want to think about getting up a little earlier) but besides that, you should eat something as soon as you get up in the morning. Don’t wait 2 hours!

Stop eating just pasta and garlic bread!!! Where is your protein?? Pasta is something that shot NOT be eatin on a daily basis anyway. Limit your pasta, get rid of your garlic bread, its very pasty, not good!

Am I understanding correctly that you are only eating basically 3 times a day? With a little something here and there along the way?

I would try to come up with something more structured, eating 6-8 times a day. Easier to do that when you are up before 9, and definatly easier before you are up by 11. As a matter of fact you should never need to sleep that late. If you do your not getting to bed early enough.

Remember if you desire to be an athlete it is a lifestyle not a hobby!

thanks! yeah i am generally trying to change bad habits, and look for good advice wherever i can get it, thanks again!

the best thing you can do is go to john berardi’s website and clemson’s website and read as much as you can.

Good advice ccardill -

  • but just one note - JB has SERIOUS knowlegde - don’t get confused by all the additional detailed stuff.

My advice to a first timer (i.e. someone trying to clean up their act and make a serious effort at nutrition)
Stick to getting a basic healthy diet first without even looking at a supplement - not even ZMA, protein or fish oil or anything else for 4 weeks minimum.

I may get some heat for that - but I think it’s justified.

(I’d like to hear if you guys agree with me on that - herb, gf, clemson etc.

If an athlete can’t stick to a clean healthy wholesome diet for 4-6 weeks without supplements then I don’t think the proper emphasis is on the benefits of FOOD.

You can introduce supplements after that.

The other point to consider is that - unless an athlete knows what their basic diet is - how do they know what effect a supplement is having on them?

Do all supplements have the same good effect on all people?

One qoute I really love is by Charles Poliquin …

  • “Food is a drug - you buy it in Safeways”

To be a little more specific - start with JB’s 7 Habits
Once these are in order then progress slowly chipping away at the marble to build your ‘David’

Hope this helps.

‘Supplement’: Something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency, or extend or strengthen the whole.

Agree with 23. Doesn’t make sense to add supps to an incomplete diet. But what about Clemson’s WR athletes with seat reservations in KFC and McDs? I’m sure they are using plenty of ‘supplements’!
