I use a modifed system for my daughter (sprinter) and another nephew (D2 football). It works well for them. You are correct in that most don’t understand when to switch, how to cycle etc., but that is inadequate knowledge of the system, and not a flaw with the system itself.

For athletes of any kind, I think you must move beyond the weight room into plyos, med ball etc. to full develop athleticism, but I still think a concurrent, or conjugate system works. Emphasis can be shifted to hypertrophy if you need more mass, but the system has room for that.
