Crusader's quest

stop crying, if you take all the energy you use for crying and put it towards training you may be a all state football player.

Sorry I keep missing you online. Fitness is the easiest thing to fix so at least that is your problem rather than something else. Unfortunately it takes time to develop! You have a few choices - take your time and do it over a year or two or increase volume of fitness type work to try and get a quick fix. The first is obviously preferred but a lot of “successful” programs simply do the second but arn’t so good for the long term improvement of the athlete.

If you choose to take your time don’t fret it. Everything will come together it just takes a bit longer than you might like.

I wasn’t really complaining. Football is different, you are going to be tired in football so full recovery isn’t necessary. Track on the other hand I can see the use of full recovery. There is no fatigue in track. Why would you need to condition for track?

no fatigue in track. no need to condition for track.

What I meant to say is that track and football are 2 completely different energy systems. I am specifically talking about the 100m.

On speed days, yes. For the 30s, they get about 3 minutes. Their output isn’t high and don’t require much more rest.

Longer runs get longer rest depending on the goal for the session

I would liked to have had more time to prep, but this is what it is. Next year will be different as I think we will be able to get through a full GPP and a full SPP.

The indoor fitness days we did early on may not have been enough. I’m not sure if it’s the cold (and wind!) or lack of fitness, but the group as a whole doesn’t do well on the tempo runs.

Tuesday

Temp: 35F

Tempo: Big Circuit

Tomorrow we will be indoors for speed work. Soon the weekly structure will change as we have meets on Tuesday for 3 weeks, and then Tues and Sat for a few.

Wed March 26

Temp: 50 F

There was a cross wind on the track and it was a little chilly , but not too unbearable.

2x30 standing
4x30 blocks

4x finish drill (30+20)

2 x 60m

Weights

I cut out the second set of finish drills and one 60m. Based on their response to workouts so far, I am getting a good idea of how much to give and when to back off.

A few of my top guys did well today considering the temp and wearing sweats during the sprints.

Thursday March 27

Temp: 40 F (as I type this, we are getting hammered with snow)

Tempo

2 x (10x100) with 30 crunches as rest.

The crunches made the runs a little more challenging and I don’t think that is a bad thing.

Tomorrow will be indoors, unless the snow melts and it’s very warm. 14 days until the first meet! I’m anxious and nervous at the same time! :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s because it is hard!!! People underestimate how long it takes to get used to this kind of work. In my experience it takes 2 years to build upto around 2000m of tempo 2-3 times a week.

Do you think maybe cutting back on volume?

Perhaps or simply waiting till they adapt to it if it doesn’t take too much out of them. The other option is increasing rest and then decreasing it slowly once they get used to it. You’ll have to do this by eye.

is that much volume even necessary for short spritners? I feel fine doing tempo once a week or even walking for an hour refreshing mode of recover.

Fri March 28

Temp: 40F

The snow melted on the track. There was a slight wind making it cool.

Short sprinters
2 x 30 high

4x40 blocks

3x 60 (40+m)

Long sprinters
2x30 high

4 x 40 blocks

SE

300, 200

Strength End
5 x 20m

Weights

Yes, everyone should be able to do a big circuit. Once you are conditioned it isn’t that hard. Yes for a beginner it makes a big difference especially in the 200 and 400m events. For a girl of 25.0 it can make about 0.5s in 4-5 months.

Mon Mar 31

Temp: 55

This week is spring break. I didn’t have access to the starting blocks so the workout was slightly modified

3x30 high

2 x 3x60 (40+m)

StEnd
6x30

400 m guys

3x30 high

2 x (2x200, diagonal walk~ 2:30 rest)
Set 1: goal times for the guys : 27/30
Set 2: 28/31

Their PBs are 56-57 in the 400, so the times relfect that, plus the weather and where I thought they would make it. They hit both times. One 300m hurdler his 27 in both reps on his first set (he only did 1).

This tells me the S-L we have been doing is starting to pay off without excessive volume.

First meet is week from Thursday. Hopefully have good weather then.

Tues Apr 1

Temp: 45

Tempo 2 x 4x200, with crunches and push ups as rest

Today was extremely windy (20mph winds), luckily they were cross wind from the field.

Wed Apr 2

4 x 30 blocks

2 x 60

longer distance sprinters did

4x30

150 (one guys is progressing nicely, running a 19.4 with a fairly good tail wind. He ran a best of 57.x last year).

Thur Apr 3

Temp: 55!

Weather was nice today. Guys were wearing tank tops and shorts. hahaha.

Modified Big Circuit tempo

100+100+100++
100+200+200+100++
100+200+200+100

Ab/push up circuit for 5 minutes
