She is 14 and last season her main focus was 800m with her last race on April 5 producing a PB of 2.28.86. This coming season (Oct-April) 400m will be the main aim but she actually wont do many races (3-4 at the end when main meets are) and won’t be doing much if any lactate work (split runs, 6 x 200 etc). Her 400m PB is 62.84 which she set in December, she ran 1 other 400m this season in atrocious weather for 63.33.
Sun 4 May
Short hills
walkback between reps, 3 mins between sets
2s x 5r x 10m
2s x 3r x 20m
1s x 3r x 30m
Does she like the 400 better than the 800?
From what I’ve read in that previous journal, the 400 should be easier to coach strategy-wise… “no jogging allowed at any point during the race” I think she’ll do great.
Don’t you have grass hills where you live? Those pictures you showed me once seemed loaded with green.
yes she does, although she prefers the 0m She will still do 800m as she will alternate between 800m and 200m races through the season till near the end.
There are grass hills but where we do those are about 2mins from home the surface is gravel but was quite firm due to rain lately.
Man what a race so close but in the end so disappointing. M was racing one of her 2 main rivals but they hadn’t raced all season. Strategy was to stick like glue then go with 120m left as she has faster sprint and often lets this girl get too big a lead (at times it has been 40m).
First 400m was 68 sec  and I thought M would die badly but she held on but went too hard at 650m (where she normally goes) she got passed at 700m and then GAVE UP  I was at the finish line and she slowed so quick I thought she was injured. She jogged the last 100m and was still about as good as she has been this season. Even if she had tried the last 100m she would have set a new PB. She was really pissed at herself and cried most the way home.
On reflection she will learn a lot from it about pacing and when to go. Her favourite race style is a casual 650 and a HUGE kick to finish which she found today she couldn’t do for obvious reasons. They race next week again and most probably at the beginning of April at South Islands which is our main season goal.[/i]

She fell at 280m  after being in 2nd and focussed on a really good run. She got up and did well to finish 3rd in 2.35.65. I was at the start / finish and didn’t see it and it took a second to register when the ground announcer said. My concern was that she would go too hard to catch the front 2 and crash and burn but she managed it well. No injury apart from a bump on her bum where she landed.
that is one of my many tricks and usually works pretty well but it was a rest day for me and the people being there would still have been too strong a factor. She is EXTREMELY self conscious.
