Coaching Fees

What are some of us charging for fees. It is tough to decide what to charge I am finding. Per hour? Season? Month? I have asked about this before…couldn’t find it in the archives.

somewhere around $30 per hour is normal unless you are dealing with a well known coach.

Per solution…nationals, scholarship, two tenths? Charge by solution and you can get more!

How many athletes have the money to pay for the necessary amount of sessions to succeed? Unless they have rich parents, probably not a lot. If they have a good job to secure the money, they probably don’t have the energy to train full time.

Unless you have athletes that can earn prize money right away, you will have to find creative ways to get paid. Create groups of athletes and have them pay smaller amounts individually (i.e. $15 per athlete per session with 6 athletes, 4 x per week= $360 per week for that group). But if you charge them $50 per hour per athlete, they are not going to have enough money to keep paying you for an extended period of time. Personal training for working folk is a different matter - hence, personal trainers can charge $50-100 per hour).

If Charlie had to rely on Ben Johnson paying him back when Ben was 15 years old, there would have never been a 9.79. If you want to create champions, money can’t be your primary focus. You can still get paid, but you have to be creative.

Swimming, figure skating, gymnastics, tennis and equestrian are different matters. Lots of money in those pots, usually from the parents.

Remember that track is the mother of all sports…traing the athletes to jump higher, run faster, throw farther/harder you will get more people than just track. I used Football to pay for college!

My rates are dictated by frequency and length of commitment. I train for as little as 10 dollars per hour if the athlete commits to 1-year or more; or as much as 80 dollars per hour for consultations.

Clemson’s right.

I have three main athletes I coach and I don’t charge them. If I coach others especially teams I charge depending on committment and how much s.h.i.t I have to put up with. I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to training.

I keep mine pretty simple. I charge $50PW for adults, & $30PW for students whether they turn up once or 6xPW. I also have them or parents/gaurdians sign a terms & conditions form so theres no whinging or negotiating of fees because they only trained once last week etc. However if an athlete doenst turn up during the week for what ever reason then theres no fee for that week.

Hearing all these coaching fees, I am glad that I never lived in North America. During my active years back in Germany I paid a total of about $30 in fees PER YEAR and for that money was trained by a team of coaches inluding a trainer of a former world record holder, a trainer of a world junior champion, a current trainer of two world junior vice-champions and a former world champion.

Unfortunaty, in spite of being surrounded by all this excellence and experience, however, I was never more than a mediocre athlete myself.

That’s where genes come into the picture, I guess.

Regards,
Robin.

I would love to hire a trainer to help me, but I just do not have the funds. There is a speed and agility coach at the local YMCA whose willing to train me for $40/hour since he’s seen how hard I work in the weight room. The normal rate for a one-on-one session with him is around $75/hour. So I guess I’m kinda getting a good deal…

Cod,

Try to get his overall assistance with your program design. Offer him $20 dollars and also offer to give him a testimonial saying what his training has done for you. Either that, or shop around for an independent coach, we don’t have to split fees with a gym so our rates can go lower if we want them to because it’s all our money.

i am with the idea tht if u want champions dont ask for money…for the mean time i dont have a coach i train myself by myself which is sooooo hard…i tried to have a coach but i found it tooo expensive plus i had to travel coz i dont have a coach i can rely on here…i need someone like charlie where u feel so secure tht u have the right kind of person u can rely on,but this is toooo much expensive  thts why i train myself,i am just trying to reach a level where i can convince someone like Charlie tht he can invest in me his effort for free till i am famous enough to pay him back

The biggest problem I have is finding a quality coach. Most of the track guys I have seen around here are big into 400m repeats with 30s rest for 100m guys because it “builds strength.” I would simply break down on such a program. Anyone know of any CF-style coaches in the DC/Baltimore area?

Hey - interesting thread …well done …

… Exactly … a better question would be how much money do you lose for every session you train an athlete (especially as they start off) for?

Training Teams can be a little easier from the control point of view - in some cases.

Team sports can pay better of course …

And this is the problem not only with coaches - but therapists and nutritionalists (and whatever esle), but primarily coaches.
Many of us would pay great sums to get our hands on a good coach

Nice! So who in the GTA wants to pool their money with me and get a charlie or clemson or number2 ?!?!?!

T-bone, where did you get your Avatar?

t-bone, Toronto is 1.5 hour flight from boston…get a ticket and I am there. I would like swing by and see Rupert’s new dance club that he purchased. This will force me to use my charm with the locals.

Another thing about fees…if you have a monster talent —ride it…then all the less talented will want to work with you. The base pays for the pharoahs tomb.

Take care…

it was a link to a site that someone had posted on here, but i can’t remember the site. had some good stuff here are a few of them…

I don’t want to hijak this thread but I thought this sort of fit in with the topic. I am looking to get into coaching in high schools. Not as a staff coach but as an independent running an after school program. Does anyone have any experience dealing with the school board in Ontario? Has anyone found a way to make this work? I and another coach already coach people at the local track (football, soccer, rugby that sort of thing). I want to get into the schools because that’s where all the talent is. Any input would be great.

I agree with this analogy set-up, but my only nit-picking question would be, whats yer definition of a “session”? In other words, what would be the duration of an adequate session?

With respect to time (duration), do you decifer b/w high school students vs higher competitve athletes or is your fees standard across the board?
