Clyde Hart, who guided Golden League 400-meter sweeps by Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards, was named Coach of the Year by USA Track and Field.
.
Winning the award for the second time in three years, Hart saw star pupils Richards and Wariner enjoy undefeated outdoor 400m campaigns, including an American 400m record for Richards.
.
“When you have two great athletes like I have, they keep me fired up,” Hart said. “It was a remarkable year. It couldn’t have been any better from their standpoint. These kids are young, they work hard and I really enjoy working with them.”
.
Richards won the IAAF World Cup in August in 48.70 seconds to shatter one of the oldest US records, Valerie Brisco’s 48.83 from the 1984 Olympics, and cap a 15-race win streak.
.
She had the five fastest times in the world this year and was named the IAAF World Athlete of the Year.
.
Wariner broke 44 seconds three times, only the third man to turn the trick, and his 43.62 seconds at Rome on July 14 was the fastest 400m since Michael Johnson’s world record in 1999.
.
Hart coached Baylor University’s athletics program for 42 years until being named the school’s track and field director.
.
“Coach Hart’s worldwide reputation as one of the world’s finest long sprint coaches was greatly enhanced with the amazing performances of Jeremy and Sanya, who dominated the world this outdoor season,” USA Track chief executive Craig Masback said. — AFP
