Calcium & Cancer

By David Douglas
NEW YORK, Oct 19 Reuters - The findings of a series of animal studies indicate that calcium deficiency, which accelerates the rate that calcium is absorbed back into the bone, promotes breast cancer tumour growth in bone, Australian researchers report.

``Calcium deficiency, due either to low calcium in the diet or to vitamin D deficiency, is very common in older women, who are also the population at highest risk of breast cancer and breast cancer bone metastases,’’ lead researcher Dr. Colin R. Dunstan said.

Metastasis occurs as cancer progresses and the cells spread from the primary site to attack other areas of the body.

Dunstan of the ANZAC Research Institute in Concord and colleagues conducted dietary studies in a mouse model of breast cancer growth in bone. The results are published in the journal Cancer Research.

The researchers found that after breast cancer tumour was implanted into the animals, the mice that were feed a diet containing only 0.1 per cent calcium showed signs of high bone turnover compared with the animals feed a diet with a normal 0.6-per cent calcium content.

By day 17, the mice on the low-calcium diet had a 43-per cent increase in bone destruction, a 24-per cent increase in tumour area, and a 24-per cent increase in cancer cell proliferation compared with the mice on a normal diet.

The team also found that treatment with osteoprotegerin, to counteract the absorption of calcium into the bone, completely inhibited bone destruction, reduced tumour area, decreased cancer cell proliferation, and increased the death of cancer cells.

Dunstan pointed out that calcium and vitamin D deficiency are easily assessed and corrected.'' Therefore, research in women with a high risk of breast cancer metastasis is urgently required’’ to see of calcium deficiency or vitamin D deficiency are risk factors for disease progression.

Interesting results, thanks kitkat. Just goes to show how everything in the body is connected, and how complex biology is.

I found it pretty alarming that estrogen was one of the “fuels” of breast cancer…

It’s all connected but I suspect the VitD deficiency starts it. the D is needed for the calcium absorption and the is already known to be a major problem in northern or southern climes with less sunlight and idiot Drs telling you that vitamins are a waste of time!

Yes quite true. Also the fact that everyone is scared to death of skin cancer, so they don’t actually spend time in the sun without approximately a 6 cm layer of sun-screen and long-sleeve shirts/pants on at 30 degrees!

I think people have forgotten that we evolved with this sun nourishing us, and a MEASURED dose of sunlight is actually GOOD for you.

I’ve also realised that not much real intelligence is required to be a doctor (intelligence in the sense of abstract reasoning and rational thinking) – you just need to be a work-horse! LOL.

I’ll agree with that statement.

I’ll also agree with the Vit D comment vs the Calcium. A study came out just recently talking about the importance of Vit D and helping against cancer.

Again, most people in the north don’t get enough sun and when it does come out they stay away from it like JW’s knocking on your door on Sat morning. 20-30 mins a day won’t hurt you.
