Is this going to be on TV in the US?

9/13/03 11:00 PM ESPN2 Memorial Van Damme
I have a feeling that Gatlin will double up at Brussels, after his PB run in the 100 a couple weeks ago. Or he’ll get injured again

Probably, but what did he run a couple of weeks ago? I never heard from him after indoors.

Is that 11:00pm your time or AZ/CA time (we are in the same time zone right now)?

Who’s in that avatar?

He’s done fairly well this year, ran 9.97s 2 wks ago. That time is ET time so It would be on at 8pm in AZ? That’s the new AJR holder in the 100, DaBryan Blanton.

Glad to see Gatlin’s back. Maybe he can reset the WR  !!!

What is Blanton’s time in the 100m?

Yes, that would be 8pm here in AZ right now.

Million Dollar Mutola Queen of Golden League
Saturday 6 September 2003
Brussels - Mozambique’s Maria Mutola leaves the stadium here this evening one million dollars richer after yet another stunning run that secured her victory in the IAAF Golden League Jackpot.

The win is historic as Mutola becomes, in the process, the first athlete ever to win outright the jackpot and the highest earning woman athlete in history, dethroning Gabriel Szabo from that pinnacle as the only woman ever to have won more than a million dollars in one year.

Mutola can add to the million dollar cheque she picked up this evening, $40,000 dollars from her win in the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, $60,000 from the World Championships in Paris and another $90,000 dollars from her wins in the six Golden League meets ($15,000 per meet), giving her $1,190,000 from her participation in IAAF events alone!

Mutola was taking no chances this evening, holding back in the pack until the last 100 metres before she made her break for the finish line. Letitia Vriesde was the early pacemaker, taking the field to 400 metres in 56.15, it was then a close pack of Mutola, Natalya Kruschelyova (RUS), Amina Ait Hammou (MAR), Mutola’s training partner Kelly Holmes (GBR) and Jolanda Ceplak (SLO) who went from the bell with Mutola right in the centre of the pack. As they came out of the final bend, Mutola made a break on the outside and was away, kicking for the finish and powering away from Khruschelyova, Ait Hammou and Holmes, who took up the pursuit but were unable to match the finish of Mutola who crossed the line in 1:57.78, nearly a second ahead of the Russian, second in 1:58.53 and Ait Hammou, third in 1:58.66.

Live from Brussels - IAAF Golden League Quotes
Friday 5 September 2003
MARIA MUTOLA (MOZ)
Winner of the Golden League Jackpot of $1 million after her sixth consecutive win in the women’s 800m in 1:57.78

“It definitely was a very difficult race for me tonight. It’s the biggest amount of money I’ve ever run for in my life. It wasn’t easy to stay calm and I was obviously very nervous coming into this competition.

“The race tonight was very different and very difficult. I couldn’t see my time at the 200 metre mark but I tried to stay with the group and change gear at the end.

“I know I have been very strong this year but you always have doubts until the race is actually over. I have been running very well throughout the season but anything can happen so I never really thought I had the Jackpot until I actually crossed the finish line.

“I am definitely going to donate part of the money to the Maria Mutola Foundation which I created with the aim of helping young children back in Mozambique to take up sport. I will obviously put some money aside for my future but my foundation is primarily important for me.

“My story is well known now. I was sponsored by a grant from Olympic Solidarity and I want to try and give something back now. There are a lot of projects that can be done back home. I really do hope that by the 2008 Olympic Games there will be 12 to 15 athletes in the Mozambique team.”

A truly wonderful athlete and very nice person … Deserves her victory.
