block work

hey CF when do you add block work into your sprinters program, I see on the spp graph you have block work but im curious is this always the case?

Simply put you add it in when they are ready for it. I do mine after about 7 weeks of preparation so around xmas.

you will quickly tell if your not ready for block work. Correct body lines etc.
How are you explosive med ball throws going?

Hey TC I would assume this is 7 weeks into your spp?

I have always been good at med throws so I would say they are going great.

More likely, 6-7 weeks into GPP, so a pro/experienced university sprinter who starts GPP in November is going to start doing blocks around Christmas. It depends on training age and whether you’re doing indoors. If you are/are coaching a beginner, there might be a 10-14 week GPP before being strong enough for block work, while an experienced sprinter taking only a couple of weeks off, could start 10/20/30m stuff on week 1.

I think TC meant 7 weeks into spp but i could be wrong.

How about Med. Ball Acceleration drills? As an introduction and/or a specific warm-up. Just a thought…

I hate to say, im very bad at those and they kill my shoulders/wrist.

How about landing on a big mat (even from blocks)? I understand I don’t answer specifically on the timing issue, just ideas…

so are you talking med ball dives, where i dive onto a mat in front-as displayed in the gpp dvd.

Actually, we start first week of SPP. So 7 weeks into season. Once everyone has them down we mix it up, blocks, med ball, falling starts, 3pt. But some form of competition every week.

ok sounds good, do you perform any kind of sled work during spp, maybe your first 2-4x30’s with the sled?

Yes, this kind of stuff and take it from there. I believe you’ll feel when blocks become “natural” to you.

Does that include the squat throws and chase without landing on your hands?
ie, squat throw and chase
double squat throw and chase
triple squat throw and chase

Like shown on the gpp.
Are you able to get video footage of yourself to determin if your getting the right lines on the throws? OR somebody to watch would be better.

If you can do a triple squat throw and chase, then you should be ready for block work easy!
Perhaps dont follow a time line, just follow how your progressing with the drills as shown on the gpp dvd. Once you have mastered the drills, you’ll be ready. For some, 3-4wks, for others, 2-3months??
