I was thinking about what the best colleges would be for a sprinter to go to in order to achieve the greatest increases in their performances. So I did a little research and here’s what I came up with:
University of Houston - With a coach of World Record status it would be tough to say no if recruited by this school, not only that Leroy Burrell has the stats to impress. He has done some impressive things with mediocre talent. Stanford Routt went from 21.05 last year to third place at outdoor NCAA’s and a new PB of 20.51 this year, Robert Foster went from 10.67 in 2000 to 10.32 in 01 to 10.18w this yr, Fred Day 10.66 hs to 10.47 in 01 and 10.34 in 02 and 03(w) and a 39.28 relay. http://uhcougars.ocsn.com/sports/c-track/hou-c-track-body.html
Texas Christian University - Coach Monte Stratton, the list speaks for itself! Raymond Stewart, Percival Spencer, Kim Collins, Jon Drummond, Michael Frater, Lindel Frater, Donovan Powell, Roscoe Tatum, Darvis Patton, Tony Allen, Bryan Howard(all have run very low 10’s/20’s and some sub-10) and collegiate record 38.04 Bryan Howard, Jarmiene Holloway, Syan Williams, Percy Spencer. Definitely check out the History and Records link. http://gofrogs.ocsn.com/sports/c-track/tcu-c-track-body.html
University of Arkansas - Coach Lance Brauman in his 1st year, from Barton County Comm Coll where he accumulated an incredible list of accollades and developed talents such as Bernard Williams. ALL SPRINTERS/HURDLERS WHO RAN THROUGHOUT THIS PAST YEAR SET PB’S(MANY IN MULTIPLE EVENTS!)!!! http://www.hogwired.com/tablestory.asp?Home_ID=5&Story_ID=3772
These are the 3 schools that I think are the best for a sprinter to go to to improve upon PB’s. Please feel free to add schools that u think should be on this list, but make sure you back it up with stats and feel free to diagree with my choices.
UH is the only school i know of the 3 and the results are always good providing you do what you are told.i don’t always agree with the programme but from a biomechanics point if view you will learn alot thus leading you to becoming a better sprinter.also you will have one of the best teachers to explian things that no other coach can explain.the head coach is leroy burrell who has held WR and of hand he knows what pressure is about, injuries etc.hes been around the block, knows the in’s and outs and will give great advice that no other non competitive coach would know about.
hes been there, done it and will pass on great advice.kyle tellez(son of tom) is assistant and he has first hand knowledge from his dad and is a great coach and can explain things in the simplist of forms which is a must in any coach.
my advice to you is to visit the track coaches first, have a chat about what you want, how you will get it and how will the programme suit you.visit the campus’ and so on because this is where you’ll be spending alot of time.
clemson would say go for the money…
personally, i might not go that way though- Div. 1 schools have been calling me up and offering me money to come run, but then it’s like the coach has bought you and owns you, and then what do you do if you get injured, don’t perform, or for some reason lose interest? I would not want to get stuck at a school that i went to just for running if it didn’t work out.
more pertinent to the post- USC got 3 of the top high school sprinters in the country during early signing, if that means anything to you.
Look at who gets in average talent and gets them to the next level. Not just who gets in the “studs” and makes them stud and a halves.
You get 3 square meals, good medical care, and a decent place to sleep at pretty much all colleges. So discounting the 2/10ths? benefit (a very real benefit for for many disadvantaged HS youths) from that alone, who is doing quality coaching?
It doesnt hurt to run where fast people are already running, but how much have they improved there, and how much of that is done clean, and is the direct result of good coaching? That is where you will find your answer.
No one would mention say, the Univ. of Minnesota but look at what a couple of 400m runners did there last spring.
I agree, I think that it would be tought to be put in that position. I think overall research (sport and academic) is important when choosing which schools to go to.
We don’t have that dilemma problem here in Canada eh! Since there are not any athletic scholarships here, too bad. Good Luck on yout choice
(1998)
Middlebury College will begin a month-long celebration of its founding on Friday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
A relay-run will retrace the route taken in September 1798 by Timothy Dwight, the president of Yale College, as he traveled by horseback from New Haven, Conn., to Middlebury, Vt.
In the U.S.A it’s not what school you go to but what you do there. The whole admissions process is really overblown these days. You would be amazed about the amount of time some of the schools put into the admission process. Each school trying to become more presitgious then the other and advance their rankings or some bullshit like that.I read a book by a person who worked in admissions(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312302355/qid=1071633742/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/002-9905629-5276831?v=glance&s=books,)You can tell they take their job way too seriously.
