After posting an analysis of the times needed to qualify for WC or Olympic finals or to make 8th place in the world rankings in the 400m, I though I’d do the same for the 100m. The results are quite interesting, I think:
slowest time to qualify for WC final:
1983: 10.39
1987: 10.37
1991: 10.13
1993: 10.16
1995: 10.17
1997: 10.22
1999: 10.14
2001: 10.24
2003: 10.16
2005: 10.13
2007: 10.21
2009: 10.04 (10.22 was needed to qualify for the semifinal)
Olympics:
2000: 10.20
2004: 10.22
2008: 10.02 (10.23 needed to qualify for semifinal)
8th fastest in the world per year:
1999: 9.98
2000: 9.99
2001: 10.00
2002: 9.98
2003: 9.99
2004: 10.00
2005: 9.99
2006: 10.01
2007: 10.01
2008: 9.93
2009: 9.94
It looks like everyone suddenly got much faster as soon as Usain Bolt appeared on the (100m) scene.
