Ben vs Carl - Sevilla 1987

Ben won over Carl (10.06 vs 10.07 respectively). Another good race from the legendary Ben vs Carl rivalry. Lots of angles too in this footage

carl was pretty much running on the line the whole 100m, good footage, thanks

I noticed that and also saw it a couple of other times when he was put under pressure by Ben (ie; Seoul)

Ben’s first few steps always amazes me. Just his ability to organize his extremities so incredibely fast!

Ben had a pulled calf right before this race and was sub-par. The next meeting was in Rome.

Sure did recover well for Rome ! Where was the race in the US when Ben beat Carl ? I think the year was 1986, may have been 1987. San Antonio perhaps ? I remember the race being shown on this programme about the rivalry between the two. In the programme Ben goes on to say how it felt when running 9.79 (feeling like his mind + body were in space or in the middle of the ocean)

the US meeting was in San Jose in May 86

Thanks. Did Carl ever race Ben in Canada ?

indoor meet…but outdoors at his prime, why would carl lewis/ben johnson waste time …

there was and his no money to this day…

ciao

Pan Am juniors in 1980, whch Carl won and an indoor 50y in 1981, which he won also.

Cool. I cannot begin to imagine what the atmosphere for the 100m would’ve been like in 1988 if the Games were held in Canada ! In all seriousness, I wonder if the debt from the Montreal games has been paid off

That start is mind-blowing. I just kept rewinding it and thinking “this isn’t human.”

And a real fun race to watch. People get so caught up with times but this sort of thing reminds me of why track is fun to witness and not just read about.

What was Woronin’s time there by the way?

greeks will never pay threi olympic games… they will and have gone bust…ciao

Thanks. Looks like I slept on that one !

It’s a shame we don’t get to see Ben laying into Carl, for disputing the photofinish, as described in Speed Trap!
