Aussie Open...

i’m getting training on the brain.

watching the aussie open today, what would you guys have a tennis player run during training?

lots of tempo? short sprints? lots of medicine ball work?

Tempo for conditioning, short accelerations, short accelerations out of different stances(lateral, backwards, fwds), agility/reaction drills(throwing those dog toys that are oddly shaped and having to either block or catch them), med ball work and weight training much like a sprinter. It would also be hard to put all of this into a schedule that as well permits ample tennis playing to work on specific skills.Possibly like this
Day 1-Short acc. fwd, Tennis, weights
Day 2-Tempo, Agility/rxn Drills
Day 3-Short acc. laterally, Tennis, optional weights
Day 4-Tempo, Agility/rxn drills
Day 5-Short acc. backwards, Tennis, weights
Day 6-Light Tennis drills(ball gets served to you and you work on specific weaknesses, I dont know maybe backhand…), I think this could serve as light tempo
Day 7-Rest

not bad. i’d add skill work on your tempo days. and warm up with skill work on sprint days. possibly only 2 sprint days. under ideal situations you’d need multiple sessions. but for one-a-days heres my take;

DAY 1- skills, short sprints, weights
DAY 2-skills, tempo
DAY 3-skills, play a few sets
DAY 4-skills, tempo
DAY 5-skills, short sprints, weights
DAY 6-skills, tempo or play a few sets
DAY 7- off

if u look again i say tennis, that is implied as specific skill work or actually playing a few sets.

“Day 6-Light Tennis drills(ball gets served to you and you work on specific weaknesses, I dont know maybe backhand…), I think this could serve as light tempo”
why not use light tennis drills for most if not all tempo sessions?
tennis players need to practice technique every day anyway

“warm up with skill work on sprint days.”
even if not sprinting but just lifting weights
I’ve liked the idea of warming up with skill work for a long time, it’s nice to see someone else who thinks this way,

what are peoples’ thoughts about adjusting the order of training sessions weights or sport first based on type of lifting and type of sport practice?
(even if weights first I would still like a few minutes of warming up with the sport)

thats why i put skills first on everyday.

with a sport like tennis i’d always do skill work before weights.
