KINGSTON: Asafa Powell, former world 100m record holder, won his 400m heat on Saturday (Feb 20) at the UWI Invitational meet, but finished third overall in the time final event.

MVP Track Club’s Powell, who ran from lane four in heat 1 was forced to keep up with the fast starting Annsert White, a regular quartermiler, and former national champion over the distance Lanceford Spence. Powell stayed close to the pack and did not make his move until the homestretch where he out sprinted the field to win in 47.57.

However, in the end, Powell’s time was only good enough for third behind Racers Track Club’s Jermaine Gonzales, winner of heat 3 in 46.37 and Michael Mason of G.C. Foster College (46.67).

Powell said: “It was a very good run. I did what I went out there to do, run like a sprinter,” he said. I could not run the entire race, so I had to run my event starts,” he added of his reason to sprint in the last 100m.

Racers Track Club’s Rosemarie Whyte won the women’s event in a fast 52.19 ahead of Nadia Cunningham of MVP (53.92). Sherone Simpson, also of MVP, was third in 54.43.

Anneisha McLaughlin won the women’s collegiate 400m in 53.50, beating her UTech teammates Alecia Cutenar (55.01), Venecia Baker (56.24) and Carrie Russell (56.25).

Shericka Williams of MVP won the women’s Olympic Development 200m dash in 23.25 ahead of Schillonie Calvert of Racers (23.97).

The collegiate women’s 200m went to Stephanie McPherson of UTech in 23.63

lol…his form when lactic hits him is as bad as mine! He literally jogged the first 250m.

Why even bother-thats the laziest 400m I 've seen in a long time.

All his 400’s are lazy. He still be all those non lazy runners in the field.

With 16% bf…

lol. Yea but he’s not gonna let a injury end it all.

It will take too much money for therapy, I don’t value it that much anymore. Gotta be smart… Too much money, time, effort, and little value just to ran 10.5…

Well since u put it that way I can understand

LOL, I always think things through. Track is fun but I just don’t value it enough to spend $200-300 on therapy etc. I’m a minimalist.

I think you guys are on to something. I think sprinters “on the come up” (10.3-10.8) need to put their money where it counts. It’s only when you get shoe contracts, prize money, and other forms of endorsements that you can be more liberal with your money.

But at the same time, this is why T gay and others are faster; consistently. They have the money to take care of all the things that are required to maintain a 10.00 minus sprinter no matter how trivial it might be.
