BERLIN – World Championships 100 Metres Bronze Medallist Asafa Powell was almost ruled out last Sunday’s final after aggravated a groin strain in the semi-finals. A senior member of the MVP track club disclosed that the sprinter only decided to run in the final at the very last minute, after his groin injury flared up.
“Those who were able to see the practice area would have noticed that he was warming up in trainers rather than spikes. That’s how bad it was. But he still managed to go out there and run a season best time. That showed Asafa’s determination and most of all it shows his ability. When he’s fully fit the world of sprint is going to become even more exciting.”
The MVP source congratulated Usain Bolt on his 9.58 seconds world record run, describing him as “a phenomenon”.
He added: “I don’t know if we’ll ever see anything like this again. It will take some exceptional circumstances to beat that time.”
The source would not be drawn into predicting the top three finishers in Monday’s 100 Metres final for women, but said MVP sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser was ready to take the title over Jamaican compatriots Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart.
“There are some things she needs to adjust coming out of yesterday’s semis and she is aware. I think Kerron will take some beating with her 10.75 time and you can’t rule out a true champion like Veronica. I think though that if everything goes well for Shelly-Ann she will be the champion and it will be a Jamaican 1-2-3.
