KINGSTON, Jamaica - Asafa Powell’s search for his first world title, again takes centre stage in March. And the former 100m world record holder again turns his attention Indoor this time with March’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey where he will vie for that crown.
Late last year, the 29-year-old Powell, who has not competed anywhere on the indoor circuit since 2004, signaled his intention to do so when he was confirmed for two indoor meets - United States Open Indoor Meet at Madison Square Gardens in New York on January 28 and Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham on February 18.
However, confirmation did not come about his World Indoor Championships appearance until Tuesday.
Dr. Warren Blake, president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), in an exclusive interview with Trackalerts.com, said Powell has indicated he wants to be a part of the 14-member team, which his association plans to send to Turkey for the March 9-11 Championships.
“We expect to send probably a 14-member team and Mr. Asafa Powell has indicated he wants to be a part of that team, and we are hoping for good things at that meet,” Dr. Blake told this website.
Powell’s best time indoor is 6.55 while the world indoor record of 6.39 is held by Maurice Greene (1998 and 2001).
